House Majority Leader Scott to Face 3rd Party Challenge

The NW Republican blog is reporting that Oregon House Majority Leader Wayne Scott (HD 39) will be facing a third party challenge from the right in the form of Libertarian Wes Wagner. In 2004 (.pdf), Wagner pulled in about 800 votes -- roughly the same amount as the Republican registration lead in the district as of April (.pdf).

The Democratic nominee in the district, which spans Oregon City, Canby and surrounding areas of Clackamas County, is Mike Caudle. To learn more about Caudle, you can visit his nascent website as well as his campaign blog. Although Caudle has a major fundraising disadvantage at this point, given the possible development in the race, this could be a race to watch in the coming months.

And what makes you think a Libertarian is from the "right"? M.

Michael:And what makes you think a Libertarian is from the "right"?

Willy Week said the same thing about the Libertarian candidate for governor (or other L candidates).

I'd still like to know why a candidate who also calls for legalization of drugs and prostitution as well can be called a right winger.

Note: There's someone calling himself "Bob T" in some messages -- that's not me.

Libertarians 9 times out of 10 always attempt to run from the right. I would be stunned if Wagner runs on the legalization of drugs and prostitution.

    Anyone wanna disagree?

So... Yes they run from the right.

That's not the same thing as actually being on the right. Look, all candidates emphasise some issues (broad and specific) over others, depending on what's perceived as hot topics in the district, or state. Do you claim that these Libertarian candidates are not for drug legalization? Is that the way you make yourself believe that the Democrats are better on the issue, or are somehow the opposite of what the Republicans are? Sounds like jealousy to me. Libertarians out-liberal the Democrats any day (that's because, to be fair, the Dems are New Dealers and not liberals in the classical or European sense). Real liberalism involves too much individual freedom for either of our major parties to be comfortable with.

I like the NW Meridian and I hope Wes the best of luck.

BT, I am not trying to make myself believe anything. Nor am I jealous about Libertarians at all. There are, after all, more Republicans in the state house than there are Libertarians.

As far as the Libertarians liberal (modern sense of the term, because it just is not worth it to argue over the classical sense anymore) positions goes... You just will never see any Libertarian run on those issues. Because they are extremely unpopular with voters.

Which is of course why Democrats (in most districts) will not run on their liberal positions. Even Ted K. ran on a "no tax increase" platform last time.

Anyone who succeeds Scott is OK by me.Scott is another knee-jerk legislator, who is right of Jerry Falwell. Now if only we could get rid of Minnis...

Sorry about that Mr. Tiernan. Sometimes I use my whole name, sometimes Bob T in a hurry. I'll use my whole name or last name from now on.

Who cares if he gets votes from the right or left. It is just another guy with a microphone saying Scott is a bully.
