Why I'm running for Oregon State Senate

By Rep. Jackie Dingfelder of Portland, Oregon. Jackie represents parts of Northeast Portland in House District 45.

After four terms in the House of Representatives, I have decided to take my fight for Oregon's future to the State Senate.

I have had the privilege to serve Northeast Portland as State Representative for over six years. With a Democratic majority in the House, we accomplished a lot this session. However, as you know, much more remains to be done.

I am running for State Senator to ensure that we have someone in Salem who continues to stand up for what's important to Oregonians everywhere: a healthy environment, strong public schools, comprehensive and affordable health care, and a sustainable state budget for today and into the future. As my voting record from this past session shows, I joined my Democratic colleagues to enact new laws that put Oregonians' values into action. These include:

My commitment to Oregon, and all Oregonians, is also exemplified in the work I did during the session as Chair of the House Energy and Environment Committee. I championed and helped pass many landmark environmental laws, including bills that jumpstarted Oregon's biofuels industry, establish a state wide system for recycling used computers and televisions, ensure that 25% of our electricity is generated from renewable sources by 2025, and update Oregon's bottle bill to include plastic beverage containers.

In addition to my legislative experience, I bring to my candidacy a long record of community involvement. Volunteering with such groups as the Hollywood Senior Center, SMART, Oregon Hunger Relief Task Force, and Planned Parenthood has allowed me to meet many wonderful people and learn a tremendous amount about the issues that are important to you.

As the next State Senator for Senate District 23, I pledge to be a strong progressive voice on issues that matter in the lives of Oregonians. I will continue to stand up for what's right and fight for what's important. As always, I encourage you to share your ideas and thoughts with me about what matters to you and your neighbors. I look forward to hearing from you.

Finally, as residents of District 23 we owe a debt of gratitude to Senator Avel Gordly for her years of dedicated service to all of us. It will be an honor and privilege to follow her to the Senate.

Best of luck, Jackie. I personally live about 3 blocks outside of your district, but I have several friends who do and will let them know about your candidacy.

I am so happy that Jackie is running to be my Senator. I’ve lived in the district (though the other House District—Ben Cannon is my Rep) since I came to Oregon in the 1980s and have been represented in the Senate by some terrific people: Jane Cease, Ron Cease and Avel Gordly. Jackie Dingfelder will carry on the tradition of public service.

I’ve known Jackie for about ten years and she is one of the smartest, most energetic and driven people that I know. She gets things done. Even in the bad old days of GOP majorities in the House, Jackie was able to work across the aisle and get things done. In the majority this past session, she blossomed. In the Senate, she’ll accomplish even more. I am thrilled to support Jackie and look forward to having her as my Senator.

Jackie is outside of my District 21. But, I think that she'll be a fine candidate and an outstanding State Senator.

This is terrific news. Jackie is a “doer” who knows how to make things happen in Salem.

I’ve had the chance to work with Jackie on many projects over the last 15 years and I can say that she is not only one of our best legislators, Jackie is also without a doubt the most energetic person I know. Both District 23 and Oregon will be well served by having Jackie Dingfelder in the state Senate.

Hey Paddy, did you check your bias at the door to the Secretary of State's office. You know the one - it's the room in which you pretended to be nonpartisan. Right up until you handed a fat HAVA contract to the company that now pays your mortgage (or rent)...

No legislator worked harder than Jackie to pass a biofuels package in the last legislative session. As important to me, Jackie was the City of Portland's champion in preventing the oil industry from inserting language in the biofuels legislation that would have nullified Portland's ordinance requiring 5% biodiesel in every gallon of petroleum diesel sold.

Jackie Dingfelder is the real deal. She will be an outstanding State Senator and I am going to do whatever I am asked to help her succeed.

Randy is right, Jackie is the real deal when it comes to showing leadership on issues important to her district and for all Oregonians. I have seen her determined and patient work in the House. I am confident she will be a great Senator.

I have appreciated Jackie's help in keeping the focus on adequate school funding and her support for quality education for all Oregon kids even during the darkest budgetary times. She understands the needs of our district schools, volunteered as a SMART reader in her Parkrose Schools and has been a solid supporter for education funding and policy progress.

Jackie's intelligence, experience and energy will be a great assets in the Senate.

I've heard wonderful things about Rep Dingfelder.

What are the prospects here and elsewhere for People of Color in the State House and Senate?
