Really...It's Never Been Wrecked

Gordon Smith is attempting to mislead voters by using an old quote of mine to imply that I have endorsed him for re-election.

For the record, I am a strong supporter of my friend and former colleague, Jeff Merkley. Jeff will restore integrity and true leadership in the Senate seat currently occupied by Gordon Smith.

It is sad that Gordon Smith has become so desperate as to use years old quotes to try to mislead voters into thinking he has endorsements that he does not have.

Who would have thought that even Mike Erickson has a thing or two to learn from Senator Smith?

Funny, I have watched the ad twice and nowhere does Smith imply in any fashion that you or any other person quoted in the ad are ENDORSING him.

It would seem that there is plenty of areas that Sen. Smith's record could be challenged, why do you have to resort to misleading the very people you claim his is attempting to mislead?

I bet someone could get Van Halen to DMCA that video right out of existence.

I agree that Van Halen needs to hear how their song is being degraded here. Is this a John McCain-style disregard for the musicians of America, not to mention the rule of law?

Funny you post this on Blue Oregon....considering Kari used the comments and commentary from Steve Novick on this very site to misrepresent him in a web site during the primary....this is reaching comical proportions boys and girls.

The saddest thing here is that Gordon Smith's shameless mis-use of people's earlier quotations lauding him out of context to promote his reelection will surely make it far harder in the future for bipartisanship.

People will become more reluctant to say nice things for fear they will show up in ads out of context, mis-used.

And yes, to the person who said this doesn't imply an endorsement, it does. The title of the ad on YouTube is "right now." That implies these are statements being made right now in the heat of the campaign.

Smith's hypocrisy knows no bounds and it's this race that I'm devoting the rest of the election to win.

Did anybody see the Corvallis Gazette Times (who is opposing Measure 57 and is generally pretty liberal) is endorsing Smith over Merkley? WTF?

I saw the GT endorsement this morning. I expected to see the hh of Hasso from the democrat (not) herald. This must be a top driven Lee Publishing position. The GT has now officially reached the fish wrapper status of the O.

I think that Randy is too much of a whiner on this one. Nowhere has Smith said Randy 'endorses' Smith.

Did anybody see the Corvallis Gazette Times (who is opposing Measure 57 and is generally pretty liberal) is endorsing Smith over Merkley? WTF?

They are a liberal rag. They just could not resist writing this closing line:

"We recommend sending Mr. Smith back to Washington."

I love the thought of some team of Republicans sitting in a windowless room having to put together ad after ad in which they have to convey this message: Gordon Smith's favorite thing in life is to nuzzle deeply into the bazooms of any liberal Democrat he can find. Gordon Smith wishes he had a picture like this, but except with Barack Obama.

    Principled!

The add shows how close the race in Oregon is; the amount of money being funneled into Oregon by the GOP is impressive as the ads are nauseating. It also underscores the truth that Oregon has tilted even more Democratic in voter registration, so Smith must appeal to the more liberal end of the political bell curve in order to win next month, knowing that it is Democrats and Independents who hold the keys to his hoped for victory. I came into this election season with some respect for Smith as a decent fellow who I disagreed with on many issues. Now I'm finding that even that respect has suffered a possibly fatal blow.

Thanks for clearing this up Randy. I'm sure a lot of us voters are so gullible we not only assumed this meant that you were endorsing Gordon, but that Jeff Merkley, who followed you in the ad, was endorsing him, too.

It's just so confusing, I'm glad you stepped in and straightened that out.

Now if you will just explain why Gordon Smith's company is running that ad bragging about hiring illegal aliens . . .

I guess people will see whatever they want to see, the facts be damned.

In any case Randy, thank goodness you made enough as a member of Council to get those teeth fixed and repair that wardrobe (or maybe the DNC treated you one afternoon at Men's Wearhouse, I dunno). At least you had a little more hair back then...
