Showdown for Mahonia Hall

Well, after many debates-about-debates, it's finally time for the actual debate in the Governor's race. Yeah, just one debate -- because Chris Dudley isn't interested in presenting his ideas to any audience that isn't hand-picked.

John Kitzhaber, of course, is a known quantity - both from his earlier service, as well as his many public appearances at scheduled debates. The big questions for the night: Will Chris Dudley finally outline his ideas in detail? Will Dudley finally explain the curious math in his budget plan - cutting taxes and raising spending, while promising to balance the budget?

As we did during the primary season, we're opening up a comment thread here on the blog - while also encouraging Twitter users to use the hashtag #govdebate to engage in an online conversation about the debate.

If you're on Twitter, weigh in with #govdebate. If you're not, watch the Twitter commentary here and post your comments on the blog. It'll be on KGW at 7 p.m.

If this were a car purchase, and I wanted to know more about the car I was buying than the thread count of the suit that was selling it to me, I'd buy it from Governor Kitzhaber. Hands down. Kitz wins the debate.

If nothing else, both candidates exceeded my exceedingly low expectations this evening.

    Dudley plagiarized Reagan

Duds was a dud. As shallow and empty as they come. Kitz was on target, on message, and responded with depth and clarity. I particularly enjoyed the few subtle jabs he took at Duds lack of experience, knowledge and accuracy, his equating Duds with failed Bush polices, and his line "A new face doesn't mean new ideas" Thinking I'm gonna vote for the experienced guy with the track record of achievements.

For what it's worth the online poll has Fitz winning 2-1.

Okay, that's done. Now we have to work on getting Dudely's supporters to vote for Kord or Wesley. The recent AP poll has them taking 16% together.
