Obama-Kitzhaber Rally Today

Kari Chisholm FacebookTwitterWebsite

President Obama is making a big four-day swing through the West - stumping for Patty Murray in Washington, Barbara Boxer in California, and Harry Reid in Nevada.

Today, he comes to Oregon - in support of John Kitzhaber's campaign for Governor.

Use this space as an open thread to discuss the Kitzhaber rally. Are you going? What are you hoping to hear?

If you can't make it, the Kitzhaber campaign is making available a live broadcast starting at 5:30 p.m. Just visit JohnKitzhaber.com to watch live from the comfort of your home or office. (Or as one friend mentioned to me last night -- from the comfort of the phone bank at Washington County Dems HQ, where they'll be calling voters throughout the speech!)

I'll be on site along with Carla Axtman. Catch us on Twitter - and follow the #kitzrally conversation here or at JohnKitzhaber.com. We'll be back to blog post-event.

Full disclosure: My firm built John Kitzhaber's campaign website. I speak only for myself.

How about an organized chant, within the hall: "No Keystone XL pipeline! Shut down the tar sands! It ain't oil!!!"

The Admin. really needs to hear this message.

Of course Cornilles, Dudley, James Inhofe, Art Robinson and almost all GOP are illiterate or in denial about climate change, but how can the side which acknowledges the threat go ahead an think about expansion, let alone continuuance, of the the most-dirty source of fuel?

This only made the day sweeter. Check out Nate Silver's prediction on FiveThirtyEight:

But we all know, the real fight is just beginning. GOTV.

I loved the speech, a real barn burner pep rally. A great reminder of the differences between the Bush/Dudley policies and the policies of the Dem. party. And the GOP strategy for this election is "Amnesia."

I didn't attend the rally, but, rather, allow me make a brief comment that I think is germaine as regards the necessity of even having to have a victory rally:

Yesterday Joe Stiglitz was on Democracy Now! He said that misfeasance in the banking industry as regards making mortgage loans was so rife, so typical, that it is impossible to tell what are the legitimate mortgages. The Obama Admin. has said it opposes a moratorium on foreclosures because the Admin. believes that a lot of the foreclosure actions are legit.

Here's Stiglitz's idea: a Chapter 11-type restructuring program that is available to mortgage borrowers who are in trouble. After all, Stiglitz said, we allow businesses to restructure and lower debt so's to keep the businesses alive. Do we not value families, too?

Of course the Admin. would have to get the new program-regulations through Congress, but on something like this, which is so obviously pro-family, maybe even a fair amount of GOP would get on board?

If Obama were even to begin to strongly advocate for Stiglitz's idea, the poll ratings of the Dems would jump double digits in one day. That's how popular this move would be.

And no need, then, for last-ditch "victory" rallies. The Dems would be in a much stronger position.

    Obama- listen to Joe Stiglitz!!!

You're kidding, right? The GOP pro-family? They do absolutely everything they possibly can to damage families: destroying family-wage jobs, slashing child-care benefits... hell, my own wingnut representative, Mat Wingard, opposed a schoolyard anti-bullying law. But what else can you expect from a guy who hit his own son with the sharp end of a screwdriver?

The phrase "family values" is just a code-word the GOP uses for homophobic bigotry, to go along with all the rest of their hate-based agenda: racism, sexism, and lying. The idea that they're going to help with any sort of mortgage modification law that would hurt their base - overwhelmingly dominated by rent-seekers - is simply a nonstarter.

Steven Douglas Maurer- Well, even if no GOP were to get on board, Obama & the Dems would still score huge in the opinion polls for strongly advocating Chapter-11 restructuring for troubled mortgages.

The excuse of not advocating or trying it because of GOP probable opposition represents a lost opportunity to make headway in the polls.

But the real reason the Obama Admin. has not tried to at least advocate for this is because its own economic team (Summers & Geithner) has been on the side of the banks and simply cannot admit to themselves that they had major parts in cmpletely screwing up the housing market and, as a result, the entire economy.
