Judge gives Port of Portland 10 days

(AP) -- A federal judge has told Longshore workers to end a slowdown at the Port of Portland that has disrupted shipping in the region.Judge Michael Simon handed down the 10-day order Tuesday after hearing that mediation had failed to resolve a dispute between the unions representing longshoremen and electrical workers over duties that amount to two jobs.Simon appointed former Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski last month to mediate the dispute. Kulongoski told him Tuesday there wasn't enough time to get all the issues resolved.In the meantime, the longshoremen will do the work -- plugging and unplugging refrigerated shipping containers.Editor's note: During the Port of Portland's "work slowdown," major shipping lines serving the Portland's Terminal 6 were instead diverted to other ports. The Associated Press reports that those diversion disrupted export-import cargos for more than 1,000 regional businesses.
