DUII driver hits Oregon senate majority leader

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A man is facing charges of DUII and reckless driving after crashing into two pedestrians in southwest Portland Saturday evening.Sgt. Pete Simpson with the Portland Police Bureau tells KOIN 6 News that 55 year-old James Monroe Gilbert was driving westbound on SW Taylor Street and turned south on 11th Avenue when he struck Oregon State Senator Diane Rosenbaum and Jeanne Lorraine Carpenter.Simpson said that Rosenbaum was knocked down and hit her head. Carpenter was hit in the right wrist but did not fall to the ground. Medical crews took both women to an area hospital for treatment.Police arrested Gilbert on charges of DUII and reckless driving; he appeared before a Multnomah County judge on Monday afternoon.
