Dan Saltzman flap a reminder of what a small town Portland is in civic circles

There are sound biological reasons you're not allowed to marry your siblings. In-breeding can lead to serious mental deficiencies. Which brings us to Dan Saltzman's decision last year to give his girlfriend's charity $600,000 in taxpayer money.

During the past week, the Portland City Council's quietest member has sputtered and spluttered trying to explain why it wasn't a conflict of interest for him to vote to grant money from the Portland Children's Levy to Cares Northwest, a nonprofit that helps abused kids. He's said he doesn't like discussing his personal life, and didn't see the need to note he's dating the group's fundraiser.
