Greenbrier receives $135M railcar orders

The Greenbrier Cos. has received $135 million in orders for 2,000 new railcars in yet another sign of resurgence in the Lake Oswego company’s railcar manufacturing business.

The orders for new covered hopper cars announced by Greenbrier (NYSE: GBX) Friday come on the heels of two other recent large railcar contracts.

In September it announced a $200 million order for 3,200 railcars. And in August it announced a $130 million contract for 700 covered hopper cars, 1,000 double-stack intermodal rail platforms, and the modification of another 1,100 double-stack platforms.

In its August announcement, Greenbrier said it would add 260 jobs to its Gunderson manufacturing plant in Portland. On Friday, the company said it will now ramp up its production dates as of January and open an additional production line in the second quarter of the year support increasing demand.
