Key Democratic legislators exploring competing tax-hike plan for 2016 ballot

Top Oregon Senate Democrats are putting together a tax package that they say could serve as a moderate alternative to a union-backed initiative that would raise corporate taxes by at least $2.6 billion a year.

Senate Finance Chairman Mark Hass, D-Beaverton, told a business group in Portland on Wednesday that he wants the Legislature to refer a tax measure to next November's ballot that could gain support across the political spectrum.

"Let's see if we can get to finding some common ground here," Hass said
