Portland finds itself now in the grip of a lead panic, reasonably so. Last week it was disclosed that water from drinking fountains tested at two of Portland's public schools had not only showed the presence of lead but concentrations of it at levels exceeding federal limits. The problem, however, was compounded by a Portland Public Schools administration that professed not to know about the findings in real time and failed to block access to bubblers and faucets at one of the schools for eight days, enraging parents. But the worst was yet to come.
