Kitzhaber: Exports critical to Oregon economy

Gov. John Kitzhaber on Thursday said maintaining reliable access to foreign markets is critical to his goals of growing jobs and boosting the state’s per capita income.

Speaking at the Port of Portland’s annual Gateway to the Globe luncheon in Portland, Kitzhaber — who hopes to create 25,000 new Oregon jobs annually for the next decade — said foreign trade has long been a cornerstone of the state’s economy, with Oregon’s export value growing 23 percent since 2009.
