Vote for Change

Jesse Cornett

As some Blue Oregon Readers know, I have been traveling around this fall working for a certain presidential campaign (after the campaign I intend to write a little more about my experience – stay tuned). I’ve had a lot of fun so far, and last night tops the fun list.

Several in my group decided to attend a Vote for Change Concert in Ames, Iowa, about thirty minutes from where we’re staying this week. The proceeds from the show, featuring the Dave Matthews Band, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals and others, go to America Coming Together, a “left-leaning” PAC (that didn’t stop the Bush supporters from both attending and proudly wearing W shirts).

The political mentions during the concert were limited. Dave Matthews took time to tell people that voting was the most important thing, without stating his obvious preference. Just when Dave and the boys seemed like they were about to wrap up their set, Neil Young (who was not an announced performer) took the stage and they played on for another hour. Neil, thankfully, was a little more outward in his support of John Kerry, not to mention a heck of a musician.

The various bands are going to a lot of swing states between October 1st and next Monday, it’s too bad they won’t be doing any shows in Oregon!

I heard DMB and Neil Young jam together on "Cortez the Killer" a couple years ago at the Bridge School Benefit in the San Francisco Bay Area. Is that what they played in Iowa?

I honestly hope the GWB supporters enjoyed themselves at the concert, and I'm glad it wasn't too explicitly political. I think the subtle messages are more effective in changing the minds of those "independents" who lean towards Bush, the people Kerry needs to reach out to.

All Along the Watchtower, Cortez the Killer and Keep on Rocking in the Free World...

Sounds like Neil Young has been showing up at a lot of the Vote for Change Concerts: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/874802.cms

Absolutely no one whines like Neil (except for maybe Jackson Brown).
