Don't Mourn, Organize

I am very pleased that we did not win this election! A Kerry win would have only delayed the inevitable collapse and cleansing of the Democratic Party.

If Kerry had eked out a narrow win, and don't think it would have been any more than a narrow win, the Ds would have been faced with an unwinnable war, a half-trillion $$ annual deficit, a Social Security/Medicare system headed for collapse, etc. The Rs with increased House and Senate majorities, an increased partisan ideology and a vast well-organized grass roots network would have made a Kerry presidency ungovernable.

Barring some form of Republican blood-letting between the business neo-cons and the ideological moralists that implodes the Rs, I believe it unlikely that progressive/moderate Ds will exercise significant federal power for the next 3 or four election 4 year cycles.

That's good. It is good because it will (or should) force us to return to our communities and organize on a block by block, issue by issue basis. That's going to be a challenge because we have precious few folks who are willing to do organizing work for the long haul. Of the hundred+ folks involved in political, union and community organizing that I knew 30 or so years ago less than a dozen are still hard at work. As Paddy will attest, political change requires a long-term commitment. The Rs started this strategy with Atwater, Norquist, et al with Nixon's southern strategy. Thirty years later it has finally been brought to fruition.

So what to do. Every single contributor to this site should be a precint committee rep, should be a leader in local Democratic clubs, should be active in community/social/cultural/religious organizations, should empty their wallets to develop a statewide full-time permanent organizing network.

If you want to inspire the proletariat to do great things then you're gonna have to get used to the idea of being a leader.... For The Next Fifty Years! ...or until you filled the pipeline with next generation of leaders.

Across this country, 48% of America voted for John Kerry. We won the educated liberal vote and lost the working class vote. The extreme evangelical community responded because they were organized by fear. Social issues were exploited to energize their base.We can't let frustration keep us down. We need to be constructive. What better way than heeding the call to work toward 2008!

Don't forget that, as far as candidates go,we did very well in Oregon. Hey, Kerry even won in Washington County! So maybe you should add to the "what to do" list - move to a red state.

From the point of view that Bush votes in the ballots are like WMD's in Iraq -- they are not there, just another lie in the usual pattern -- then Kerry got more votes, and he wins. Whatever the evanzealotous furies did, Kerry took their best shot and still came out on top. Proving the same old same old religious rightwing minority size, (1-in-6 vote single-issue anti-choice), is still a minority. Making up votes does not make up voters -- the evangigantic monster does not exist 'out there' in the dark. Although it only takes a few of them complaining to the moon to sound as bad as banshees. They probably will be organized by fear next time -- isn't their very existence built on the principle of organizing fear? -- and if so they probably will lose again, too.

Straight thinking means telling the difference between people's votes and the myth vote, which are the lies cable tv said. Like WMD lies.

Where the vote was not falsified, such as vote-by-mail across the entire state of Oregon, the people 'did very well' in getting their majority choices.

The feeling going around among groups that are already organized is that now is time for the next step -- mobilize.

BOYCOTT Cable TV. Call today and cancel subscriptions -- it'll kill FOXzis. Those liars should be downsized out of their big-bucks jobs. To street sweepers. Or unemployed bums.
