Domestic Tranquility

Kristin Flickinger

Yesterday was a good day. The Oregon Senate passed HB 2007, legislation that would allow same-sex couples to enter into domestic partnerships. Coupled with the legislature's earlier passage of SB 2, which prohibits discrimination based on sexual-orientation and gender identity, GLBT Oregonians have been given more statewide protections than ever before.

That's good news in my book, hard won by the countless hours of phone-calling, door-knocking, packet-stuffing, organizing and everything else it took to get us to this point. Thank you to all who volunteered, testified, organized, worked overtime, called their legislators, questioned, answered, got married, came out, quit their jobs to join campaigns and showed-up time after time to do whatever was necessary for the last 34 years.

Thank you especially to those who stood up for the rights of Oregonians when it wasn't a popular thing to do.

Thank you.

    Good to see...

I still vividly remember those horrid OCA campaigns during the 1980s, and being approached in a mall by several rather rude and loud anti gay proselytizers during the same. They were wrong then, but fairly well represented. Now here it is only two decades later and hardly a peep outta 'em. Times changed for the better in this regard. Now if we can only get rid ourselves of that Senator Smith, then I'd say Oregon has at long last turned a deeper shade of blue...

Oregonians vote against Gay Marriage but the Democrats decide they are GOD?!

Hope they enjoyed their limited time in control 'cause they just lost many many votes for 2008.
