Bill Richardson to endorse Obama in Portland

The Associated Press is reporting that former presidential candidate Governor Bill Richardson (D-NM) will appear in Portland with Barack Obama - and will endorse him for President.

SANTA FE, N.M. - New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president, calling him a "once-in-a- lifetime leader" who can unite the nation and restore America's international leadership.

Richardson, who dropped out of the Democratic race in January, is to appear with Obama on Friday at a campaign event in Portland, Ore., The Associated Press has learned. ...

"I believe he is the kind of once-in-a-lifetime leader that can bring our nation together and restore America's moral leadership in the world," Richardson said in a statement obtained by the AP. "As a presidential candidate, I know full well Sen. Obama's unique moral ability to inspire the American people to confront our urgent challenges at home and abroad in a spirit of bipartisanship and reconciliation."

Bill Richardson should think again about endorsing Obama. I think the public is only beginning to understand what Obama is truly about. Obama is extremely influenced by others, not always the smartest choices in peoples and their beliefs.

It shows that party insiders are sending Hillary a signal loud and clear - time for HIllary to concede.

She has lost and Obama has won.

The party has had it with Hillary and her dirty campaign, and they recognize Obama as the right choice.

Bill Richardson was moved by Obama's speech and by his behavior and skills on the campaign trail. I be hope he will be the first of many other party leaders now who are leaning towards Obama. That should neutralize any thought that Hillary has of trumping the primary results with the super delegates. Her polarizing tactics trying to use Wright as a wedge and the Ferraro incident have undoubtedly caused negative reactions in the party.

    Thank you Governor Richardson!

And Laura, you are way off base. If anything, Obama has shown the ability to stay firm in his principles despite being exposed to some outlandish ideas. He is willing to invite and consider diverse opinions (ala book on Lincoln "Team of Rivals"--one of his favorite books)before making decisions. This is the opposite of what we have experienced the last 7 years.

does Richardson's support bridge a gap' between Latino voters an Obama? I don't know, but it certainly won't hurt, i'd think.

Great that he's doing it here. Looks like I went to the wrong Obama rally, back in Sept when he wasn't the messiah.

For what it's worth Matthew, (and I don't think it's worth much) Hillary lists Team of Rivals as one of her favorites too.

That's an interesting choice of venue for Richardson. You'd think he would have chosen a place with a higher latino population than Portland, OR. But we're grateful for the attention anyhow.

Imagine if Richardson had made up his mind before the Texas primary. It might well have put Obama over the top in that state, and then we'd be done by now. Then again, if that had happened, Oregon might not have gotten much attention.

ahem Obama did win the most delegates in Texas, although I'm sure the margin would have been larger had Richardson endorsed at that time.

Have any of the Democratic candidates running for the party's nomination endorsed Hillary?

Maybe there's a reason for that.

I wonder if Clinton now making a last ditch attempt at claiming the popular vote (which I don't see her getting anyway) is a reflection of her already having been told that she will not get the superdelegates?

Lani, as far as I know, only two former candidates have endorsed another one: Dodd and now Richardson.

this is great news for obama. and yes, the CW on this is that it can only help him w/ the latino vote.

So, where does Obama/Richardson talk go from here? Anyone think that Richardson will be a strong VP choice, especially given how animated he was? If not, then at least Sec. of State?

  • (Show?)

Look for Richardson as Sec. of State, likely not VP (as much as I want it myself). Just some chatter I heard...

  • (Show?)

News reports have been saying that Richardson is indeed rumored to be a candidate for VP.

That's an interesting choice of venue for Richardson. You'd think he would have chosen a place with a higher latino population than Portland, OR.

Not at all. Richardson is a politician who happens to be Latino, not a Latino politician. Kind of like Obama in that regard (happens to be black), or Barney Frank (happens to be gay) or Ron Wyden for that matter (happens to be hetero & white).

And besides, with a beard like Bill's sporting in this video, who better to promote politics in Portland? ; )

Bill Richardson appears like JUDAS on Good Friday. Shame on you, Bill Richardson. You would not be where you're at if it weren't for the Clintons. No sense of loyalty. Your backstabbing will come back to haunt you one day. As they say in Spanish "el mundo da muchas vueltas"

Bill Richardson gave a great speech today. He said that one reason for his endorsement now is after hearing Obama's speech on race. He also admires how Obama has stayed above the fray.

Richardson called the Clintons before he made the announcement. They're good friends. Richardson watched the super bowl w/ the Clintons.

In the end, his loyalty to the country was greater than loyalty to any individual. It took courage and it's something we need more of.

Richardson earned his credentials. He didn't marry them.

Bill Clinton launched Bill’s Richardson career. They worked together. And now” well, I FEEL that Obama would be better for party.” What does he know about Obama? He was impressed by his speech. I didn’t see many people who ever worked with Obama anywhere in Illinois or at Senate are coming out and saying: yea, I worked with this guy. He is real deal, and he did that and that. On another hand, if Super delegates are endorsing Hillary they all saying: I worked with her. I know what she is capable of. She is right person. Not “I feel”, but I know. I don’t see loyalty to the country in this endorsement, more like midlife crisis.

  • Lani (unverified)
    (Show?)

You're claiming that the only reason Richardson has a career is because of Bill Clinton ...

    unlike Hillary.

You think that the Clintons had some sort of Affirmative Action program for the Secretary of Energy and the Ambassador to the UN? Wasn't that reckless of President Clinton instead of finding the most qualified person for the job? Was Clinton that incompetent? or was Richardson qualified?

Please post more. A laugh does everybody some good.

Let me get this straight. Someone with a Masters Degree, work as a Senate staffer and in the State Dept. before 14 years in Congress was an affirmative action hire by the Clinton Administration?

Sounds to me like someone in the Clinton campaign has not yet learned what was wrong with Geraldine Ferraro's remarks.

  • (Show?)

See, it's comments that the Clinton camp has been giving in the news about Richardson's endorsement that are part of the reason why I'm not supporting Hillary in the primary.

What should have been said is something along the lines that you've known Richardson a long time, we're disappointed that he chose not to give us the endorsement, but we respect his decision.

That would have been the mature route.

Instead, they give comments about it being past time for his endorsement to matter and such.

This was in no way an easy decision for him. But it's times like these when you disagree with your "friends" that you learn who your true friends are.

    I agree Jenni,

I am amazed at how low the Clinton campaign has gone in this election cycle. The James Carville remark (echoed by others here) really crosses the line.

Deliberately comparing Richardson to Judas and, by extension, Clinton to Jesus during the Easter weekend is disgusting.

My family and I apologize to the Clintons and the Campaign for Bill Richardson's endorsement of Obama. Although I do not speak for all Hispanics, majority of us feel ashamed at the disloyalty and "spur of the moment immatureness" of this endorsement. We do not know what have gotten inside Bill Richardson's head -- since we also can not speak for him.

We all know, the Hispanic Community, what the Clintons have done for our Community and for America. And so contrary to what the other campaign wants to paint, we all know that the Clintons are the least racist. They have helped so many minorities in their stay at the White House --- women, children, African-Americans, Latinos, Asian- Americans.

We also know that Sen. Clinton is really and truly the most knowledgable, experienced and the best among the Presidential candidates to lead us back to being a GREAT AMERICA once again!

Thank you, again, Pres. and Sen. Clinton, for your love and passion to help America!!

People, we really should try to preserve some perspective on this primary battle. It is politics to look for advantage, including in ways that makes your opponent look bad. It is reasonable to be concerned how all this affects the Democratic Party in the short and long run. It is understandable that partisans feel anger and hurt.

But really, politics gets like this. Turning one candidate into a symbol of evil and the other into a martyr is over the top hyperbole that does no one any good. For all the real differences, there is not that much distance between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on the issues, in their values, and in their politics.

It's fine to take sides, to work hard for your candidate, to get excited, but please, do not spend all your passion loathing people who have political positions not that different from yours.

People losing their lives and well being because of lack of health care, military violence, a wrongheaded justice system, economics that promote greed and dismiss the value of human live, disregard for the natural systems that make life possible, and dismissal of our responsibilities to the young deserve our passionate concern. Whether it's American Idol, the Final Four, or the media circus that political campaigns become, diversion of our deepest passions from serious, lasting concerns is wasteful and petty.

That's right, Tom. And isn't that the problem? Why even bother to work for someone with the values, issues, and politics of Kucinich if you're going to end up supporting Republican Lite? Isn't it time to say, "Goodbye" to the old politics and support "change"?

Why not military service for the children of all members of Congress - who have funded this criminal war in Iraq?

They have children who have declined to serve during the Iraq war.

Pass a law that says this - whenever Congress and the White House take our country to war, all able-bodied military-age children of every member of Congress, the President and the Vice-President will be conscripted automatically into the armed forces.

Tom>The Clinton campaign has pulled out all the stops in this election cycle. There's no limit to how low they'll go to destroy Obama and toss the election to McCain.

If Obama supporters ignore it, they're wimps. If they respond, they're "attacking". It's a lose-lose game as long as we let the Clintons frame the argument. Unfortunately, the media is supporting the Clinton machine and swiftboating Obama almost nonstop.

If you want to see the level of discourse raised, then Clinton has to drop out or stop these inexcusable attacks.
