Clinton and Obama Coming to Oregon

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are both returning to Oregon for campaign stops in the next few days.

From the Associated Press:

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama will return to Oregon Friday and Saturday, a visit that will overlap with the Thursday and Friday appearance of his rival, Hillary Clinton.

The Obama campaign said today times and places would be released later. Obama made a strong showing in Tuesday’s primaries, and political analysts have long thought he leads in Oregon.

It will be the second visit to Oregon for Clinton and the third for Obama. Former President Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton have also visited Oregon on Hillary Clinton’s behalf.

Oregonians have already received their mail-in ballots and can cast them immediately. The vote is counted May 20.

Clinton has scheduled a stop Thursday at Central Point near Medford, but no other events have been confirmed.

Republican candidate John McCain plans a Portland stop on Monday.

We'll have details when they are announced. Discuss.

Wow, avwrobel, that's an incredibly cynical and off-base snipe at Obama supporters. You have basically relegated the supporters of the presumptive nominee as not people who want to move their country forward after years of staggering demoralization, but rather as shallow fad chasers. In the future, I would hope you would refrain from such snarky comparisons, as they are not constructive to the ultimate goal of defeating John McCain and taking taking our second seat in the U.S Senate.

Hillary Thursday and Friday. Barack Friday and Saturday. McCain Monday. How biblical. On Sunday, Oregon rests...

First of all, Obama has not "won" yet. He's not officially the nominee and he won't have "won" in my mind until he takes the oath of office next January.

Secondly, I have been an Obama supporter from the start and while I am beyond happy that so many young people have become involved in politics via Obama, I'm getting a little tired of the snarky comments of anti-Obama people who a) treat these young people in such a derogatory manner and b) are convinced somehow that ONLY people under 30 are supporting Obama.

Get a clue. I'm 42, single, female, politically active my whole life. I don't own an Ipod and have never seen Facebook. And the only games I play are card games. Pinochle, anyone?

Wow. Ditto everything that Ms. Mel Harmon said, except I'm 40, married, female, politically active since Bush took office. I do own an iPod and I do have a college degree, so do you want to throw my vote out?

By the way, my entire immediate family supports Obama. Let's see, we have:

-a 46 year old white male who went to tech school, but doesn't have a four year degree (my husband) -an 80 year old white female who never attended college, and spent most of her life as a single mom (my mother) -a 49 year old white male, who dropped out of high school to join the military, and now is a blue collar worker (my brother)

In addition, my neighbors support Obama (married couple in their 50's) as well as numerous colleagues at the office (all well into their 30's and 40's).

We're a diverse group to be sure, but we're all seeking the same ultimate goal --- to heal this country and get back the America that we all grew up being so proud to be a part of.

So you really, really, have no idea what you are talking about

OK I admit it. I was getting nauseous with CNN anti-Hillary crap. Seriously, to get a much more realistic view of Barack Obama go to Noquarterusa.net and read the blog on Patrick and Obama. You'll see why Massachusetts rejected Obama and gave Hillary a 13% win there. Didn't you all ever wonder why that happened in one of the most liberal states? Also, see Obamatruth.org. This fellow has tremendous baggage that the right wing media will collectively exploit brilliantly. We can't let it happen with an Obama candidacy. Hillary and Bill have been through 2 general elections, one with an incumbent Republican administration. They know how to win, and a Democrat must win in November. Obama is just too big a risk. Make the clear-headed decision and support Hillary!

    Kay,

Don't look to me for facts. I just want to win in November. That little McCain will tack to the center, push Obama out to the far left, claim Hillary would have been the more worthy candidate and grab her supporters, or at lest enough of them to win. Kerry only won Pa. by 3%. An Obama candidacy is a disaster that must be avoided. Nothing personal, just politics.

Let's just look ahead at helping Obama, the Dems and the country win in November. It will be an historic victory and then the real work will begin: global climate change, a health care system that harms more than it helps, and an economy that has abandoned the bottom 1/3 and keeps on elevating the top 1%. We need all of the skills and passion that we can bring to the table. Let's ensure an Obama victory so that we can get working.

Ah yes, that old "Hillary and Bill" rigamarole again. That old twofer routine again. Guess what, avwrobel? Not everyone thinks Bill Clinton was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Not everyone looks forward with anticipation to the third term of the Clinton co-presidency.

I've had it with the Hillary and Bill argument. Do you hear Barack Obama campaigning on the basis of his spouse's record?

By the way, avwrobel, what exactly do you mean by "Hillary and Bill" (actually, it was Bill and Al, as in AL GORE) going through a general election "with an incumbent Republican administration"? In my experience, "administration" refers to the executive branch. Or was that some sort of Freudian slip insinuating that the Clinton/Gore administration was actually a GOP administration?

You can't bullsht a bullshtter, avwrobel. This is clearly personal for you.

Also: the "tremendous baggage" dredged up by your friends at Obamatruth.org is exactly the kind of garbage we're all so tired of. Step out of the 90's and look to the future, my friend. The Bush/Clinton/Bush era is over, and Obama is poised to bury the "politics of personal destruction" and swiftboating that so defined that era.

Now, if you'll excuse me, my Facebook page needs updating...

avwrobel is likely talking about the Bush/Quale Administration, which Clinton and Gore defeated in 1992.

Clinton is bringing her train wreck of a divisive campaign to Oregon. It's over for her but she's apparently going to try to foul the nest before she leaves. Here's what she had to say in WV yesterday. Her legacy from this campaign when she is finally abandoned by her own supporters. The George Wallace of 2008.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-05-07-clintoninterview_N.htm "I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on," she said in an interview with USA TODAY. As evidence, Clinton cited an Associated Press article "that found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."

"There's a pattern emerging here," she said.

For more on this story, check out the article on nytimes.com (and the CNN exchange between Donna Brazile and Hillary backer Paul Begala, embedded in the article)...

The New York Times, May 8, 2008, 10:08 am Clinton Touts White Support By Kate Phillips

As if the divisions between race and gender in the Democratic Party hadn’t been further exposed through Tuesday night’s exit polls — and by a very heated exchange on CNN between Donna Brazile and Paul Begala, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s interview with USA Today on Wednesday is further mining those tense depths.

Oregon Bill's cite is remarkable for two reasons: one is how close Donna Brazile used to be to Bill Clinton.

The other is the crude racial divisiveness to which Paul Begala is reducing things. "We can't win with just African-Americans and eggheads." As if no white voters are voting for Obama, as if no one who's voting for Clinton would vote for Obama in the general.

And of course, the opposite is true too. Democrats can't win when African-Americans don't turn out. They get a huge % of those who do vote -- but turnout can vary quite a bit and make all the difference.

The inverse of my observation applies too, of course, it's not as if no black voters are voting for Clinton or as no one who's voting for Obama would vote for Clinton in the general.

But with either candidate, there is going to have to be a big effort to reach out to get the supporters of the other to turn out in November. I believe Clinton would have much greater difficulty doing this, because she's been much more dismissive about Obama's supporters than the other way around (one of the things about Obama's "bitterness" flap is how unusual that statement actually was for him and his campaign; while Begala's quote above is just slightly blunter than things the Clinton folks, Bill and even Hillary herself say regularly).

The other is that for Hillary to get nominated will require the overturning of the popular result. You can argue from an elitist technocratic point of view that the supers are allowed to do just that in the best interest of the party and that the results are fairly close. You can argue it 'til the cows come home. And be elitist as hell in doing so.

But at the end of the day if people believe their candidate really won, and that was overturned, getting them to turn out is going to be a much tougher row to hoe.

It won't be a cakewalk for either of them. But I think Hillary is more likely to be a disaster than Obama.
