Mannix concedes, but won't endorse Erickson. Schrader cruises to victory.

Kevin Mannix has conceded in the GOP primary for the 5th Congressional District - but won't endorse Mike Erickson.

From Politico.com:

Kevin Mannix, who lost in the Republican primary in Oregon's 5th District to businessman Mike Erickson, will not be endorsing his rival - a serious blow to the Republican party's chances of holding the very winnable open seat, currently held by retiring Rep. Darlene Hooley (D-Ore.).

"I will not support him because he's a dishonest person and that's my bottom line," Mannix told the Politico. "I cannot support a dishonest campaign. I need to stick to my principles here, and he'll have to deal with it. That doesn't mean I'm endorsing or supporting the Democrat, but I'm not doing anything for him."

Kurt Schrader easily cruised to victory in the Democratic primary. From KOIN's coverage:

[Erickson's] victory could be a hollow one.

While Mannix and Erickson accused each other of grabbing cash, paying girl friends for secret abortions, raising taxes and generally being political low-lifes, Democrat Kurt Schrader quietly sat back, waiting to see who his tarnished Republican rival will be in the November general election.

Ha ha! Roll out the red (or blue?) carpet for Schrader...

Mannix is a prime example of the pot calling the kettle black.

I'm actually curious as to why Ericson won and I hope anyone who lives in the district and talks to Republican voters can offer some insight. Are Republicans just tired of Mannix? Do they think that he slung dirt at a fellow Republican that should not be spoken? Do they really love Ericson and just not believe the charges? Did this come out to late to change many votes? Some insights here would be really helpful to understanding what went on and how it will effect the Fall.

I just heard on the radio that someone got 12,000 write-ins on the R ballot for AG & they're saying it's Mannix. Sorry if this has already been discussed somewhere on BO today, my first time on since this morning.

I think Oregonians have a particular dislike for scorched-earth campaigns. I would imagine that, in that situation, I would have reluctantly voted for Erickson. I just couldn't reward those kinds of tactics and encourage their future use. (Even if it was true, Mannix went about it in the sleaziest way possible.) And the reason Mannix pulled this in the first place was because he was behind, so presumably there are folks in OR-5 who just didn't like him to begin with. Also, I would think Mannix's sleaziness factor would have made him a sure loser in the general. At least with Erickson, there's the hope (still doing the hypothetical Republican voter thing) that the allegations weren't true.

    Katy:

Thanks for the info. I think we're going to hear about a number of write-ins for various races between now and election certification day. The Republicans were really pushing for write-ins on races where they had no candidate. We may just find out we have more heavily contested races than we thought.

Now Mannix is 0-5 in elections since 2000. I wonder which office he'll run for -- and lose -- next.

In his my-way-or-the-highway approach, it seems that Mannix may be taking some hints from the nastier elements in the Clinton/Obama blogosphere.

Yeah, Mannix ran for AG before and was trounced. So maybe he should give it another shot. And when he loses he can claim that Oregon is like Zimbabwe and he was cheated because of sexism.

Correction, the write-in was for Saxton. Even scarier if you ask me...

Katy, your numbers are a little off. The total number of write-in votes was just over 12,000, not 12,000 for one person. Also, earlier in the month, Saxton said he would not be the nominee if they wrote him in. They will have somebody, but it will take some time to know who it is (word on the street is Ron Paul is the leader, thus far).

I understand the numbers, I should have said there were 12,000 write-ins and it is my understanding that the Republicans launched a write-in campaign for Saxton despite the fact that he said he was not interested. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if he accepts? I was told yesterday it will take 20 days for the write-ins to be counted.

I would imagine that, in that situation, I would have reluctantly voted for Erickson.

Gotta disagree on this one James. Mannix is what he is and we've known him long enough to see him clearly.

If the abortion allegations are true, Erickson is a full blown sociopath who took a young woman that he had impregnated, stuffed some hundreds into her hand and dropped her off in front of an abortion clinic like a stray dog.

    <hr/>

Way back in the day I agreed to hold a female friend's hand in going through this (and no, I was not a party to insemination having had all possibility of such a responsibility taken care of years previously). No one does it lightly and there is emotional trauma involved for the woman regardless of politics.

Really, what kind of pig would even consider that kind of behavior toward someone that he had so recently exploited?

Sorry to say, I'm with Mannix on this one.....

Mannix frightens me but I was rooting for him in this race. I know Erickson and have no doubt he paid for and dropped the girl off at a clinic, no questions asked because in his world, don't ask, don't tell is more than a good policy, it's a way of life. Unless you get caught and then you lie, lie, lie.

Mannix is a sleaze. No doubt about it. But I don't know him to be a liar and he also knows local issues. Erickson doesn't.

It's easy to say "let's close the borders." It's easy to say "I won't vote for taxes." Does Erickson have a clue what that entails? Does he know what the local issues are? I guarantee he doesn't.

I have 2 theories on why Erickson won. 1. By the time voters knew of Erickson's inconvenient baby (kudos to Indymedia), it was too late to change their vote. 2. They hate Mannix but thought he might actually have a chance at beating Schrader given his experience and so Erickson seemed a smart choice in that he would be too critically wounded by his own sins.

Regardless, I'm too busy laughing that Erickson actually claims to have run a clean campaign (I suppose he thinks he ran a clean campaign against Hooley too?) and the last media report I read, he didn't know what the last name of the girl whose abortion he paid for and took to Mexico. Maybe those wild houseboat parties ate a chunk of his brain.

Gordon Smith has also said he will not support Erickson. Greg Walden's spokesperson said: "For now, he's the nominee."

    For now??

Oregon Right to Life is sitting out on this race.

I have acquired a MASSIVE file on Erickson. If he does not end up being the person who runs against Schrader, I'm going to be bitterly disappointed. :)

  • (Show?)

Yea, I just thought it was interesting that Walden's people would say "for now." Are they going to try to force him out of the race and then replace him with someone else?

I swear, the Republican Party is just so screwy right now.

Mannix is probly not endorsing Mike Erickson because he WANTS a democrat to get in, i mean we all know that mannix use to be a democrat, so why wouldn't he pull such an act?
