Merkley's new ad + DNC appearance announced

Today, the DNC announced that four U.S. Senate candidates would get prime-time TV appearances - before the vice-presidential speech: Jeff Merkley, Tom Allen (ME), Tom Udall (NM), and Jeanne Shaheen (NH).

The Politicker:

[T]he spotlight will be on Merkley Wednesday night when some of the Democratic Party’s top U.S. Senate challengers take center stage.

In a statement released with the announcement, Merkley said he was more excited to have the opportunity to talk to the convention about what he was going to do once he got to Washington D.C., not the battle that lies ahead of him to get there.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to address the Democratic Convention and speak to my vision to partner with Senator Obama and make Washington work for working families again,” said Merkley. “Oregonians are ready for the kind of change Senator Obama will bring to Washington.”

Also, in his first ad of the fall campaign, Jeff Merkley takes Gordon Smith to task for obsessing about furniture during a time of war and economic distress.

Discuss.

He's aiming for the coattails of Obama, but he should also be giving Wyden his due and talk about the potential partnership our other Senator.

Frankly, the ad sucks. It's too vague with this furniture reference. What happened? It is not explained well in the ad. But it could have spent more time tying Gordo to Bush. now THAT's the millstone that will take Gordo down.

There has been a lot said in the campaign ads about Smith taking campaign contributions from “Big Oil” and the tax breaks “Big Oil” receives (that if taken away will only increase the price of gasoline, diesel and home heating oil to consumers). The question I have is: Who in Oregon national, state and local races no matter what the party affiliation is receiving campaign contributions from giant corporations like Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) who supplies much of the corn and feed stocks for ethanol production, and all other the big corporations that have been given massive tax breaks by the Oregon Legislature, so much so it will have a significant negative impact on state revenues? Honest answer please!

    TR,

    Your comment is nonsensical.

So, by your logic, the more money we take from the US public to give to Big Oil, the cheaper the price of gas? Well, I for one don't own a car and don't buy gasoline, so it doesn't help me one bit for my tax dollars to be going to Big Oil when I could be keeping them in my pocket instead, and I'm sure that goes for those who actually own motor vehicles as they are much better managers of their own money than Big Oil.

I don't have any idea. Do your own research. ORESTAR is here (though temporarily down at this moment.) OpenSecrets is here.

Here's what I do know. At the Netroots Nation conference, Jeff Merkley appeared on a panel about energy independence, and he referred to corn ethanol as a "dead end."

Talk about nonsensical – you say you don’t own a car and don’t buy gasoline - but do you go anywhere on the roads? The asphalt paving on the roads is an oil based product. Concrete takes diesel fuel to be delivered and poured. Most food products and consumer goods are transported to your nearest store by trucks that use gasoline or diesel fuels. Public transit also uses diesel fuel. However, if you use public transit, the taxpayers are subsidizing YOU to the tune of approximately 80 percent of your ride, and drivers using gasoline or diesel fuel are subsidizing the vehicle you are traveling in. If you ride a bicycle, YOU are NOT paying for the roads at all. So if you travel anywhere on roads, then YOU are a slacker when it comes to paying for what you use, and lining your pockets by sponging off of the people driving cars and trucks that actually DO pay for the roads. In other words, it is nonsensical to complain about big oil receiving tax breaks that unquestionably lowers the price of gasoline and diesel fuel at the pump when you are receiving taxpayer subsidized tax breaks yourself for your travel from the very drivers who benefit from the big oil tax breaks you complain about.

Echo Steve Buckman. I've been waiting for this kind of ad to show up.
