A Snowpocalypse! Scrapbook

Carla Axtman

Yesterday in my missive bemoaning the state of our current weather system, I asked for photographic evidence your very own mantle of white. The results of this ask are even better than I expected. So without further adieu, hit the jump and see how your fellow Oregonians are faring with ARCTIC BLAST 2008!

Here's the view from Gresham...Simonis1

And Jenni Simonis' adorable daughter Abby...doing that whole kid-winter-snow thing:

The view from Baker City looks an awful lot like Gresham, only with beards and very large dogs. Here's Chuck Butcher and his dog, Gus.

Salem has been getting slammed, too. Dmitri Palmateer took this beautiful shot of Mill Creek at Willamette University by Goudy Commons.Salem_willametteu

Sylvia Rendon from Northeast Portland snapped these:

LeAnn Locher, of LeLo in NoPo fame, posted this video of a brave sojourn through streets of the white stuff. It comes complete with kitschy holiday music:

She also has some great photos from today's snow hell on her blog.

Byron Beck, who has a spiffy new blog, did the downtown PDX thing. That's Portland City Hall, I'm guessing from a few days ago:

Leslie Carlson commented earlier this week that she'd seen snowboarders doing their thing on the streets of Portland. Earlier today she sent photographic evidence:

And then her husband Michael sent evidence of Leslie!

Along with this Currier and Ives style shot of the Ladd's Addition area of PDX:

More of the beautiful mess of Portland (also from Michael)

Robin Stein emailed photos of the Montavilla area. This looks like something that should resemble one of those rural Wisconsin or Minnesota winter scenes instead of Portland:

Migrating west......

Here's a YouTube vid sent by Susan Castner, shot yesterday at NW 102nd & Cornell (Beaverton, I think):

Hillsboro City Councilor Aron Carleson is under a big pile of snow too. Here are her photos:

Aron's dad (from Beaverton) sent one to her too. Even hummingbirds have to eat:

Jonathan Singer (of MyDD) hails from Oregon. Jonathan is staying in the West Hills while on break from school....

I have oodles more photos for this scrapbook. I'll do another post later tonight or tomorrow with more of the Snowpocalypse!

Carla, cool scrapbook! Sorry I didn't have anything to submit, I've been holing up and going out only at vampire hours (maybe the influence of Let the Right One In) -- too dark, so no photos from my ill-advised midnight assault on Mt. Tabor!

Tedder, nice to "see" you outside the Wikiverse -- both in Blue and Snow White Oregon! Good luck putting that dirt bike to work in this stuff!

Carla, your email is bouncing. Must be as full as an xmas hog.

I put my photos on Facebook. They're available here even if you don't have a Facebook account.

It's quite the workout just to walk to the mailbox. It'll be nice when the sidewalks are finally clear. If I had a snow shovel, I'd have already been out there clearing some. As it was, I've already used a broom and kid's sand shovel (it's a larger one, not one of those little ones) to clear around mine and my neighbors' doors.

Jenni: look out your window. They say the National Guard should have arrived in G'ham. Enjoy!

  • (Show?)

I haven't seen the National Guard myself (other than in pics), but my husband did. He had to walk to work in all this mess (well after the mayor had called the state of emergency and both him and the sheriff had asked people to stay at home). When he called me to let me know he'd made it all right, he said he'd seen the National Guard.

On his way in to work, he stopped and helped three vehicles that were stuck.

Even if we did have a car, he'd still have been walking to work since we're all snowed in here.

welp, the roof on my shop caved in a couple of days ago, and the 30' x 40' structure has been solid for at least 45 years.

No pics as I'm out of state right now, but I'm looking forward to digging my welders saws and other shop tools out when I get back, along with the bike, the other bike, the lwanmower, etc.

    Dang.......

    Pat:

Sorry to hear that. That is probably the one upside to being so close to the Gorge - it blew most of the snow off our roof.

I see I-84 is just about to open. They're plowing the on-ramp in Troutdale right now. Once they're done, the freeway will open back up. That's good, as Troutdale is packed with trucks.

Oh Pat! Sorry to hear about your shop! :(

Gee Pat, I hope your equipment will be alright. I have all of my saws, and fabrication equipment in my barn. I can imagine what having your shop roof collapse can do to a person.

And the snow begins again in Gresham... sigh
