Bob Tiernan: Get off my lawn!

Kari Chisholm FacebookTwitterWebsite

Oregon GOP Chairman Bob Tiernan has asked two members of the House GOP caucus to end their re-election bids.

Why? Because they had the temerity to exercise some independent thought and vote to support the tax increases passed during the last legislative session. The two are Rep. Bob Jenson (R-Pendleton) and Rep. Greg Smith (R-Heppner).

What really got Tiernan angry is that AFSCME is going to support Jenson and Smith. (Y'know, be bipartisan and stuff.) The O's Jeff Mapes got the money quote from Bob:

Tiernan released a statement urging the two to refuse any help from the public employee unions or to "consider removing themselves from the election for the Republican Party nominations for House Districts 57 and 58.”

When I talked to Tiernan, he was more definite. "Based on everything they've done, they ought to get out of the party," he said flatly. "The unions coming to their aid is just more ratification of who they are and who is supporting them."

Let me get this straight: Tiernan screams and yells about how the the Democrats and labor unions are overly-close allies -- but when two members of his party manage to win their support, he wants to kick 'em out?

So much for the big tent, I guess.

Don't know about the rest of the Democratic party, but I'd be happy to have Bob Jenson as a Democratic state representative from Pendleton.

Bob & Greg could always pull an Arlen Specter or Bernie Sanders. That might be the best move as those "RINO" brands are permanent.

I'm with Tiernan on this one. At least we enlightened urban progressives would have a couple of more conservadems to villify on a regular basis.

    That's gotta be a plus............

And I've heard Democrats say that Mike Schaufler isn't really a Democrat. But he is, and Jenson and Smith really are Republicans. They're just Republicans with a lot of public employees in their districts. Notice that Umatilla County almost passed 66 & 67.

    Kari,

I just love that photo of Tiernan. I printed and mounted it next to the cat box. Nothing phases our cat but, as much as our dog likes cat poop, she won't go anywhere near the box with that visage hanging there. ;>)

Well, not between now and the election. It's too late to change your registration and still run in 2010.

Wouldn't it be poetic justice if they both win primary and general elections and then after being sworn in switch to Ds to give the Dems a true supermajority and a big f-you to Tiernan?

    Good for Bob.

That would be the best. day. ever.

Funny. Now the Eastern Oregonians who worry about the Valley dominating the state will have a Republican to kick around.

Meanwhile, maybe Jenson and Smith could consider seeking both the Republican and Democratic parties' nominations in May, and see who shows 'em more support?

This is standard behavior for Bob Tiernan. The legacy of dirt continues.

I'm glad to see AFSCME support and endorse these R's. It would be great to see OEA support Jenson, Smith and Morse.

I wonder how many republican candidates Mr. T has chided for taking contributions from phrma, energy, banks, insurance and all the other usual corporate sponsors of Team Regressive?

Tom McCall, Mark Hatfield, and Bob Packwood would be be labeled RINO's by the current pacyderm party.

Jenson was elected as a Democrat and ran for re-election as unaffiliated before joining the Republicans.

My lawn is only small - approx 4m x 5m There is far too much soil in the garden and there are dips and mounds everywhere. I would like to kill the lawn off, re-dig the garden and level it before re-seeding.

    Pedro:

Mark Hatfield...would be be labeled [a RINO] by the current pacyderm party.

    Bob T:

Maybe; maybe not. This label seems to have been used first by those who are anti-abortion, using that issue alone as the litmus test. This has changed a bit, but it's still selectively used. So far as I can tell, the unwavering anti-abortion wing would have been happy living in Romania under Ceausescu -- abortions were illegal, and economic policy was irrelevant.

I AM SURE THAT MARK HATFIELD WOULD HAVE BEEN RUN OUT OF THE GOP IF HE WAS AN ACTIVE CANDIDATE IN 2010. IT APPEARS THAT HE MAY BE THE LAST REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE TO GET MY VOTE

Bob T - I was not aware of the origin of the RINO designation. I posted my comment after following Kari's link to NW Republican above. Over there commenters are agreeing with the Oregon GOP Chairman (with your name!) and calling Jenson and Smith "RINO's".
