Mitt Romney uses Oregon like ATM; can't be bothered with mere "voters"

The O's Jeff Mapes reports that Mitt Romney will be in town on June 4th for a lunchtime fundraiser at the Governor Hotel.

An invitation sent to donors said Romney will appear at a fundraising luncheon in Portland's Governor Hotel that carries a ticket price of $2,500 per person. For another $5,000, donors can also mingle with the candidate at a reception and have their photo taken with him.

Here's a copy of the invitation (pdf).

He was also here to extract cash back in June and October of last year. And once again, he won't actually be talking to any real voters -- and won't even be doing the sort of pro forma political stop that usually accompanies an ATM run. He's not even going to go read stories to kids, or tour a factory floor, or anything.

"The sole purpose of this trip is fundraising," said Nierenberg, adding that he did not expect Romney to participate in any other events while he is in Portland.

Perhaps we should take this as a good sign - a sign that Oregon's definitely off the board for the Republicans in 2012. In years past, of course, we've made the top-17 list of swing states, but have always dropped off when the map shrinks to a dozen or less.

No word if the Occupy Portland folks are planning a protest as they did in October, or if Steve Novick will reprise his personal pro-dog protest against Romney.

It's a good job he's not going to make any more than a pro forma appearance. He swanned on into West Philly to talk education and came off like a real arrogant chump. I don't think I could stand to watch The Replicant try to gin up sincerity.

MittBain knows he's got no shot in Oregon. The millionaire's club will do what they can for him in other states. Thanks to the ridiculous electoral college R voters in Oregon can just sit it out. The election will be contested in a handful of swing states. Thanks to the GOP Supreme Court's view that corporations are people and money is speech, it will be billionaires who own the public airways in those states.

Please keep me posted when Obama makes campaign stops in Idaho and Wyoming. Y'know...to really talk with voters.

Not much difference in my mind than Mitt swinging by for the grip-and-grin.

IMO, Obama has a job/other work to do. Mitt has more flexibility as to when and where to campaign. This just highlights for me my heart burn with the primary process. By the time our primary came around, some candidates had dropped out of the race. So, once again, Oregon did have much input or impact. Wonder why voters here don't bother to vote?

But in Romney's defense (I can't believe I wrote that), what are the odds that Oregon will be a swing state in November, or will go Republican in the presidential race? Million to one? Zillion to one? Money aside, Oregon is a waste of Romney's time. His campaign is being perfectly rational in treating Oregon as an ATM.

Kari, you tagged the wrong article in your post. http://www.oregonlive.com/mapes/index.ssf/2012/05/mitt_romney_plans_fundraising.html

Can't knock the guy for trying to raise some cash in a state he has no chance winning. Obama has a huge cash cow in California but doesn't bother doing much campaigning. Fly in, collect the checks and head to the battleground states.

This is a Dem. site and we are going to knock the GOP candidate when he ignores Oregon voters. The fact he is ignoring Oregon voters is because we have a crummy electoral college system of electing Presidents, which I might add, seems to have no critics in the GOP. My view is that every vote should count and a candidate should campaign in every state for every vote. Dem voters in Wyoming or Mississippi, GOP voters in California or Oregon should have a voice in the election of our president. And we have a crummy GOP run Supreme Court that is destroying American democracy.

A GOP presidential candidate visiting a mainly blue state state mainly for fundraising in June. Shocking, I tell you, shocking! ;-)

I believe the kids today say it this way:

    MEH.

Uh oh...Dems in DC actually get a lot more contribution money from Bain Capital than do Romney/GOP: "...Bain people have lovingly contributed to their former CEO's presidential campaign, but almost 3/4 of their contributions have gone to other candidates- 72%, to be precise, have gone to Democrats." http://lbo-news.com/2012/05/26/bain-actually-loves-dems/

The Host Committee is priceless - not ONE Oregon GOP elected official - just official... umm... it's sounds harsh but it's real - losers. Chris Dudley, Rob Cornilles, Gordon Smith (ok, he only lost his last election). The GOP is even importing Washington highprofile loser Dino Rossi. The lone elected on the hosty list is WA Con. Cathy McMorris Rodgers. You know her; she's the token lady standing in the background when the the Men of the GOP House get to the podium to say important things.

Soooo..... why no Oregon GOP elected hosts?
