Portland adopts ban on plastic bags that takes effect Oct. 15

The Portland City Council today approved a ban on plastic bags at checkstands of major retailers and supermarkets.

"This is another step in a longer journey," Adams said before casting the final of five "yes" votes this afternoon.

    Ah yes, the Portland City Council - masters of the symbolic act.

    This will do nothing to keep the Portland Police Bureau in line, help the homeless, rebuild the streets, or control the kamikaze cyclists infesting this city.

    This will do nothing to reduce our water bills, reduce gang membership and violence, bring jobs to this city, or help people barely getting by with housing.
