Mo Cheeks: Back in Philly

MocheeksIn non-filibuster news today, it looks like Mo Cheeks is headed home to Philly. From the AP:

PHILADELPHIA May 23, 2005 — Jim O'Brien was fired Monday after one season as coach of the Philadelphia 76ers and replaced by former Portland coach Maurice Cheeks, one of the most popular players in franchise history. ...

"Mo is family. Mo bleeds 76ers. He bleeds Philadelphia," [team president Billy] King said.

Cheeks was fired March 2 after nearly four seasons as coach of the Trail Blazers. He had a 162-139 in Portland, the fourth-highest win total in Blazers history.

Cheeks guided the team to the playoffs his first two seasons, but the players hardly made Cheeks' tenure easy on or off the court.

The team was nicknamed the "Jail Blazers" after several brushes with the law, many of them involving marijuana possession.

Previously, Mo Cheeks appeared on BlueOregon here: Randy Leonard's Mo Cheeks and Natalie Gilbert and Mari Margil's Oh Mo, We Hardly Knew Ya...

Cheeks could be a good coach for the right team, a team of professionals and team players. The Blazers need, well, a miracle.

He was a hell of a point gaurd as well. His stats were second best to Magic and his defense was relentless.

I was reading some Headlines from The Tonight Show (which are always a great pick-me-up, btw) and thought this would be a great promotion if Regal is allowed to sell alcohol in their theaters:

    Check it out.

When he got the ax, I believed it was good for Cheeks and bad for the Blazers. This proves I was at least half right. Mo gets out of the dysfunctional Blazers family and returns home. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

(And did you see Conzano's article yesterday? The dysfunction keeps on dyssing the good people in the Blazers organization.)

im in philly too for the next hour and writing from downtown: Mo could do a helluva lot worse for a city. Much luck to him!

I don't know if Mo Cheeks is a good coach or not. How could you possibly tell given the situation he was in?

He does seem like a good person though, and I'm glad he's getting the chance to coach in Philly that the Blazer organization so churlishly prevented him from taking advantage of a while back.

Philly has only one problem that needs solving, Allen Iverson. If you're not playing basketball with all 5 guys, you'll never make it to the Finals. Sure, you'll win some games here and there, but the game gets won with all five guys. Refer to the Pistons.

Rasheed let Larry Brown guide him, and all of a sudden a loud mouth loser goes to the Finals. Not that Rasheed didn't/doesn't have tons of talent, but while he was here it was all about him, and it seldom made his teammates better. I'm glad he grew up and I hope Allen Iverson can too. He would make Cheeks a great coach even if he wasn't.

The issue with the Blazers is they think they need a star rather then a team. I think it comes from the notion a great man can save us. No. We can save us it we work together. The Blazers can win if they learn to work together. That's the most winning combination there is, and it will win 99% of the time.
