Gregoire defeats Rossi... again.

Over at OPB, Tom Banse has the breaking news:

Democrat Christine Gregoire can continue to serve as Washington Governor -- at least for the time being.

A judge in Wenatchee has just upheld Washington's November election results.

Chelan County Judge John Bridges ruled that Republicans failed to prove that illegal votes and counting errors robbed candidate Dino Rossi of victory.

Of course, it'll get appealed. Discuss.

    jesus...somebody MAKE IT STOP!!!

This should serve as a lesson to all Democrats: Don't give up when the election is close. Okay? Do you get it John Kerry? How about you Al Gore?

Wake up! Neither of you should have handed the election over. Maybe if you weren't such pussies, the Democrats could have contested election results in Florida and Ohio. Fight until you're out of breath; that's what the Republicans do, and that's what you're going to have to do to beat the Republicans.

So what gives on this one? Is the Washington Supreme Court going to overturn the election or support the lower court? Don't we have any bored lawyers looking at this blog?

Tell me what's going to happen.

glenlivid has it right, stay in and fight! They're won't yield an inch, and even when it's over and they are beaten they will not admit it. Take G. Gordon Liddy, the jail bird, invited onto talk shows to bemaon the injustice of it all, that Felt was so "disloyal". What G did was criminal, and he was given a fair trial and convicted, sentenced and served his time, so now he has something we ought to here? He wasn't wrong? It just gives bold faced liar a whole new meaning.

    And so it shall be:

BELLEVUE, WA 2005-06-06 - Republican candidate Dino Rossi is giving up his challenge to the results of the Washington governor's election. Rossi said the current composition of the Washington Supreme Court makes it unlikely the Republicans could overturn the hotly disputed results. Earlier today, a Chelan County judge ruled there is insufficient evidence to nullify the victory of Democrat Christine Gregoire. Speaking from his former campaign headquarters in Bellevue, Rossi graciously congratulated the winner in the closest governor's race in history. Dino Rossi says he doesn't know what his own future will hold. The commercial real estate agent and former state senator declined to answer when asked if he would run for governor again in 2008.

I LOVE this: "...the current composition of the Washington Supreme Court makes it unlikely the Republicans could overturn the hotly disputed results."

That, and the fact that a REPUBLICAN judge, in a Republican county, handed him a defeat. And the fact that the law of the State of Washington doesn't support his sham lawsuit.

    Dang, he dissembles fabulously.

At first I was a little surprised that Rossi didn't appeal, but on second thought it makes sense. My guess is that the appeal would have dragged on for several months and he knew from the facts of the case (Dems didn't look that great and they still won) that it wasn't going to go his way. And it would sure cut in to the time he could spend fundraising to take on Maria Cantwell next year.

About Rossi vs. Cantwell, check the comments at the NPI blog John links above.

It's funny how the partisans on each side react whenever an election is close. During the Florida mess, for example, the Republicans wanted Bush's highly questionable 500-odd vote "victory" to stand no matter what and want to "move on" while Democrats screamed about recounts, revotes, "counting every vote" and voter intimidation/fraud.

But when things are reversed, like in the Gregoire/Rossi case, the Republicans are the ones screaming and whining about recounts and revotes while Democrats -- most of whom privately suspect that Rossi really did win this thing -- just want to "move on" and ignore all kinds of allegations of fraud and misconduct.

It looks like neither side is really interested in truth or facts (i.e., who really won) but only cares about "winning." Sad that this is what passes for democracy in 21st century America.

Congratulations on your "victory," Governor Gregoire.

most of whom privately suspect that Rossi really did win this thing

Like you Jim, I do find this all entertaining, but I don't suspect that Rossi won. To the contrary, I think that Gregoire ran a crap campaign and that the strong libertarian turnout among Seattle gays took her by surprise. Usually libertarians work against Republicans in the electoral calculus, but well.....these were gay libertarians who would never have voted for Rossi.

Then there's the whole systematic dishonesty thing. You may not logically equate a systematic and illegal purge of overwhelming democratic voters (around 70,000) as was done in Florida in 2000 with a couple of uncounted ballots lying around at some polling location in Washington.

Forget all of the "probably true" charges that the owner of the Deibold voting machines publicly stated that he would deliver Ohio for Bush (and apparently did just that) or that a computer programmer testified before congress that he was ordered to write programs to skew the '04 Florida totals to Bush.

Just focus on the fact that in many areas of the "too close to call" states, there were several instances where voters at predominately Democratic polling locations had so few machines and staff that voters were required to wait hours to vote, while a few miles away, predominatly Republican poling places had no wait at all.

Nothing like this was even alleged to have happened in Washington. Sometimes one side is systematically more corrupt. I hope you can honestly tell the difference.
