Very bad cartoon. To those who do not hate Bush with every breathing breath like me, it raises some fundamental questions.

Are you implying restricting the freedom of speech with those you disagree with politically? The owl breaking the television set after only 3 points can make those with a mind think so.

Would you hold the same standard to Hugo Chavez? Last I heard he wants to remove presidential terms in Venezuela and wants to rule for 25 years. Do you support socialists who own the media, restrict freedom of speech through a background in the army (Remember Chavez's failed coup?, and become authoritarian dictators under the premise of the poor people?

YOV--get a clue. The owl crunched the TV after Bush congratulated the "Democrat" majority. Not Democratic, "Democrat". This intentional failure to use the adjectival form of the word is something the GOP has been doing for years. Bush has made it a specialty of his.

    lin qiao,

So, what is your point? Bush is dumb? Believe me, there are worse qualities in a leader. Consider Putin of Russia or Chavez of Venezuela. At least Bush will end his pathetic failure that he has the nerve to call a presidency in 2008.

The real beauty of the evening was Jim Webb's speech. The part where he elaborated on CEOs making 400 times more than the average worker and the eroding of the middle class hit a chord with me. What would have made his speech is if he would have said that the War in Iraq come March 20, 2007 has been going on longer than U.S. involvement in WWII. Pearl Harbor happened on December 7, 1941 and Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945.

YoungOregonVoter: What's your main beef with Chavez?

  • (Show?)

Wow! I hadn't seen that Chavez had sought and received legislative approval to pass laws by fiat and eliminate presidential terms.

Kudos to the World's Maddest Dog! Raspberries to humorless pukes who can't appreciate parody. I just can't watch lectures by the 'resident any more, knowing that he doesn't even consider mere citizens to be constituents.

Malach: Perhaps if you'd gotten past the third sentence you'd have heard the President's many thoughts coinciding with traditionally progressive thoughts on health care and immigration to name a few (of course you'd have discounted those because the President's not sincere right?)

YoungOregon: This war is going to go on. In some distant future, you will look back on this time and feel a kind of longing for when you could afford to be against it. Incidentally, how many casualties in WWII? In Iraq?

The 'resident's "progressive thoughts" are obvious pandering to the opposition party to get them to submit to his demands that they give his recycled, previously-losing plan for escalation of hostilities a chance to 'work'. Unfortunately for all, there is no such chance, even if we were inclined to allow it.

This cartoon parodies an old Tootsie Pop ad. That's where the humor is. I doubt they're still running those ads and I suspect you're too young to remember them.

YOV may be too young to get the reference to the Tootsie-Pop commercials...I thought it was a great cartoon, worth a chuckle.

    To Young Oregon Voter,

Did President Chavez set up an Abu Ghraib, posing prisoners with panties on their heads with Korans being flushed down the toilet while 10th grade dropouts (Hi Lynndie!) calling themselves soldiers take pictures?

Today's new general in Iraq says Abu Ghraib was the single biggest mistake of the U.S. invasion and occupation and says the next time AQ flies jets into towers, they'll be reminding of Abu Ghraib.

History is such a b!tch, and young 'uns shoud learn that, like now.

  • (Show?)

I'm with Pat on the cartoon, but as to what's wrong with Chavez, there's a whole column there.

Basically, as has been the case with many Latino Socialists, when pressed by the corporatists from the US and the Venezualan oligarchy, Chavez becomes repressive as a defense mechanism. He fetters the press, jails opponents, and voila, he becomes what he hates.

He has good excuses, but he's no longer about "freedom".

(Also, his rhetoric is ineffective on the larger playing field.) The stridency alienates potential and former allies.

He has unwittingly cooperated with his enemies, providing them with examples of his illiberal behavior and aiding them in their efforts to bring him down.

    (Show?)

Chavez - he is nationalizing the oil industry in Venezuela, the(former)leading exporter of oil to the US. The audacity to think his Country should benefit more from exploitation of their natural resource.

  • (Show?)

While Chavez occasionally makes decisions I applaud, he is clearly on a fast track to totalitarianism and, probably, the Cult of Hugo. He is completely intolerant of criticism, eager to rewrite the constitution to fit his own agenda, and unlikely to step aside anytime in the future. Progressives do themselves no service at all by failing to take a good hard look at him. He is not a good choice for Heroic Leftist.

    Ed Bickford:
You must be a brilliant military tactician. Do tell, how is it you have any idea whatsoever as to the likelihood of success or failure of General Petraeus' plan? Or, are you just repeating the tired words of bankrupt pol's (who themselves have no idea either)?

This is real. Regardless of your opinions on why or how we got into this, we are in it. You might ask yourself, if we lose in Iraq and Iran's sphere of influence widens to southern Iraq (where the oil we all are so desperately dependent on is) and the killing fields are allowed to open with no abatement in central Iraq (unleashing a wave of human suffering, misery, and pain unparalleled since the genocide our leaving Vietnam set-off) will the world be a better place? Did we do our duty to our children? We have a moral responsibility to prevent these events from happening and the blood will be on all of our hands if we do not.

We will see unbinding resolutions meant to hurt the President politically come to pass, but we won't see any serious blockage to General Petraeus' plan. If opposition leadership was serious, they'd halt funding, but they're not serious, they are playing Iraq politically (as you know) and will in the end be seen to betray their own campaign rhetoric. Will the world be a better place because of it? No, their shrill tones are encouraging to those who would gladly decapitate you and your family and because of our addiction to oil we would become beholden to further demands of a hostile regime.

    Just my .02

  • (Show?)

"Incidentally, how many casualties in WWII? In Iraq?"

Phillip Carter, the respected military analyst, keenly points out the futility of comparing Iraq body counts to WWII, not least because the mortality rate for soldiers wounded in battle is now one-third what it was then. Other factors include who's doing the fighting (infantry vs artillery and air or sea power), and how many people and sqmi an individual soldier is responsible for (seeing as how there are so many fewer soldiers in Iraq than in WWII).

  • (Show?)

    another gem:

"You might ask yourself, if we lose in Iraq and Iran's sphere of influence widens to southern Iraq (where the oil we all are so desperately dependent on is) and the killing fields are allowed to open with no abatement in central Iraq (unleashing a wave of human suffering, misery, and pain unparalleled since the genocide our leaving Vietnam set-off)"

Why is all of this in the future tense instead of the present? We HAVE lost in Iraq. Iran's sphere of influence HAS widened. The killing fields ARE open with no abatement, with a wave of suffering, misery and pain not seen since Vietname.

The proper future tense should be applied to the truism that the world WILL be a better place, because we will no longer be directly causing and exacerbating the violence, and we will slowly begin regaining the trust of the world community in order to get their help in fighting the real war. Either way, the blood is already on my hands. Innocent Iraqis have been killed, raped and tortured by my own people, with my money, in my name. That makes me want to throw up every time I think about it. Despite the fact that I warned and agitated against the invasion since well before it started, I am still responsible. We all are.

  • (Show?)

Please stay on topic. This is not a post about Hugo Chavez.

  • (Show?)

YOV asked, Are you implying restricting the freedom of speech with those you disagree with politically? The owl breaking the television set after only 3 points can make those with a mind think so.

Huh? Methinks you're imagining evils here that don't exist. I think the more reasonable interpretation of the 'toon (and it's only a 'toon) is that the owl didn't like what he was hearing (or was about to hear). The owl has every right to smash his own TV set -- or, like me, stop watching after about 20 minutes.

  • (Show?)

BTW, for those who don't know the original Tootsie Pop ad, you can see it here (sort of).

Also, this month's Wired Magazine answered the question.

  • Sid Leader (unverified)
    (Show?)

    Hey Angry Red Man,

I'll don't have to ask the national-award winning student debate team at Lincoln High School where they learned their history and debating skils.

They learned everything they know in Portand Public Schools.

Have a great day. We do.

  • (Show?)

When cultural references miss the youth and you get 'em, well, you're no longer a youth. Anyway, this was a witty 'toon. I made it all the way through the speech and felt slightly dirty afterward. However, Jim Webb's rebuttal was like a fresh sprinkle of clean water.

    (Show?)

Mr. Sid Leader.....okay, uh, how about the rest of the schools in PPS that turn out 'tards on a regular basis?

Lincoln is the exception...not the rule. A nice "crutch," if you will, that helps to overshadow general poor performance, mis-management, and inept teachers that work for PPS.

I hope your job is eliminated in the next round of budget cuts.

  • Sid Leader (unverified)
    (Show?)

Actually, Angry Red Man, PPS will be -adding- teacher jobs due to the recent regime change down in Salem (Dems rule) and the overwhelming vote on the new school levy.

You asked for other examples of PPS success: Jefferson Dancers travel the globe and win nat'l awards, DaVinci kids made an award-winning rain garden, a Mt. Tabor kid humiliated former gubernatorial candidate Ron Saxton on this very web site when Ron forgot how to spell his last name, Clarendon elementary students write and produce an annual opera that plays to packed houses downtown, Sunnyside school is doing some amazing work with the environment, while Abernathy students and staff have organized and won the right to cook their own food at the school, instead of warming something up from downtown. It's healthier and cheaper!

If you want to volunteer, ARM, and can pass the FBI fingerprint check, call 503-916-2000 and ask for the volunteer office.

    Thanks!

  • Johnnyredman (unverified)
    (Show?)

Right...so none of the pathetic examples you offered really have anything to do with academic ratings.

I mean, I'm really impressed that Jefferson has an award winning dance team; yet the school is full of thugs who can't read.
