Fox News: Steve Novick is a "very awesome dude".

Steve Novick appeared on Fox News today to promote his new "Beer with Steve" ad - and they showed him some love.

Discuss.

Congrats to Steve for getting an interview by a national network. That it was Fox News is a bit on the dubious side as the piece Eric Boelert wrote yesterday at Media Matters illustrates.

After seven years of beating progressive bloody, the tide has turned and Fox News must surely be greatful that Novick crossed the informal Progressive/Democratic picketline and let Fox News use him to burnish their badly tarnished image.

So... congrats, Steve. Should both you and Al Franken win I imagine you two might have some things to discuss in the light of his magnus opus - Lies and the Lying Liars who tell them. The part about what Fox News did after Wellstone's funeral should prove to be particularly fruitful.

I think it was pretty insulting to Steve. The guy on Fox treated him like a carnival freak.

I guess that's the price he pays for making the hook the emblem of his campaign.

  • (Show?)

I think the Fox guy was only nice to him and called his ad the best campaign ad ever, because Gordon Smith called and said he wanted to run against Novick.

    ;)

Have you seen the new Riley poll showing Novick over Merkely? Apparently one clever TV commercial beats being Speaker of the House.

US Senate Race January 2008 Democratic Sample 201 Steve Novick 12% Jeff Merkley 9 Roger Obrist 3 Pavel Goberman 2 Candy Neville 1 David Loera 0 Undecided 73

Riley Research Associates / Statewide Voter Survey January 31, 2008

That falls into the "any TV time is good time" category, but mainly because Steve handled himself well. He deftly turned a fluff piece into a light boost for his campaign. I don't know that it will move a vote, but it was nice.

Very nice "in the news" item.

Let's now discuss issues of substance and have no more "BO is unfair to Novick" stuff.

No one is going to vote either way just because some people complain a blog is "unfair".

That is exactly why you do an online only ad!

Hey "Blue," by the that Riley poll is shit. Two out of three people I asked today are still rooting for John Edwards (plus me) still doesn't mean he'll get 75% of the vote in Oregon. I think Riley's sample is about as scientific.

Polling behind Pavel. That's got to hurt.

No, that's the price he pays for choosing to appear on FOX with a (D) next to his name.

Steve simply has no fear. He's been on Lars two or three times, and takes the absurd misstatements of facts and wingnut rhetoric totally in stride. I totally understand and support the idea of not playing into Fox's game, but I like someone with the stones to go into the lion's den anyway. And in some strange measure, even the wingnuts seem to respect him for that.

  • (Show?)

TJ is exactly right. Plus, millions of people who aren't wingnuts watch Faux News. Some of them are stuck in places where it happens to be the channel that's on, whether in a dentist's office, getting their car serviced, or in Dick Cheney's hotel suite.

Yeah, the interviewer reminded me a little bit of one of the hosts of The Man Show, but he appeared to lack political views of any kind. I'm sure he was asking things that people at home were thinking, hoping he would ask (like the weird aside about holding babies), and Steve handled it very well. The whole thing demonstrated Steve's ability to talk -- and connect -- with just about anyone.

Great job, Steve! Not that I'm surprised. %^>

I really liked the way Steve handled himself, given those questions... he rolled with it, didn't manage to lower his own stature in any way, but also didn't come off looking too stiff or overly PC/political. Good job! Maybe that "hard left hook" line will come in handy after all...

Any day of the week I'll take someone who can handle himself with ease and grace in the real world, over someone who skillfully sticks to carefully scripted talking points. That's what I'm looking for... grit and authenticity. That's Novick.

LT, that's not the charge, it's that BO pretends to be neutral when it is not.

and wow! 73% of democrats undecided in that riley poll? now i kind of feel like a nerd for paying so much attention!

Should I be voting for the "very awesome dude"? Not all publicity is good publicity, especially from Fox News.

Watching that was like watching a frat producing a political video.

ROFL - very well put, Katy!

Unlike the rest of the FOX "news" shows, the specific purpose of Red Eye is to cheapen the entire concept of serious political engagement.

Anyone who has sat through even one six to eight mintue segment would understand the game.

From watching Steve's performance, it seems clear that he and his campaign understood that going in, and he was pretty skillful in getting in a few policy points despite the format and "talent" that drives the show every day.

Still voting for Jeff, but due credit to Novick.
