Felonious Monkeys: Blumenauer makes the Daily Show...

Congressman Blumenauer got the full Jon Stewart treatment last night. Watch it yourself:

No one does it like the Daily Show. On a more serious note this new law may prohibit many states, Oregon in particular, from sending their newly elected representatives to Washington DC.

Great bit. Maybe some of us need to carry cards certifying that we are human primates so as not to be confused with those covered by the bill as we cross state lines. Perhaps there will need to be inspection stations designed into the new Columbia River Crossing bridge. We do want any of those Washington monkeys getting into Oregon.

The brighter felonious monkeys were watching the Daily Show. The dumber ones are running government.

As I have pointed out on numerous occasions, there is no hard/fast definition of species, and homo sapiens is not defined in case law or statute. The point for this post would be that, if it weren't for the spectacularly unsuccessful nature of the genus, you wouldn't have a decent definition of just what kind of ape you were. You certainly wouldn't have a legal leg to stand on. I most recently pointed this out as a good reason to not vote, that you couldn't be sure you weren't committing a crime. Dunno about that one. From the volume of calls my cat got on behalf of the Merkely campaign, perhaps non-humans can vote.

It's totally left to a 'I know it when I see it". Beware, though. If you succeed in establishing your non-human credentials, it's open season on you, as long as you're hunted "mercifully" and not tortured. Only humans- whatever they are- have lives with intrinsic value under our law.

Locally, Lewis and Clark law school is one of the few pushing the envelope in this regard. As it stands today, if your cantankerous neighbor 'accidentally' runs over your non-human companion, you can only recover for the market value. There is no concept of loss of "condomestic benefits", et cetera, as would be the case with a human. The law does not recognize any recoverable loss. On another legal point, while progressives are so proud that they are running everything...right...how about at least getting California style leg. passed requiring all apartment complexes to make reasonable pet accommodations.

Blumenaur looked like the idiot he truly is on the Daily Show. I applaud Jon Stewart for showing how retarded he is.

His bullsh*t speeches on global warming sicken me as well.

Plus, totally non-intellectual, that bow tie he always wears makes him look like even more of a kook.

I was a bit embarrassed by "Orville Redenbacher's" appearance on the Daily Show. But the Rep. from Utah had the best line - that the bill would only have helped in the most recent attack had the chimp been willing to chase the victim from Connecticut across the state line into New York. That was funny.

Still, why is Congress wasting time on this? Surely we have other things to worry about right now that are far more pressing.

  • (Show?)

Becky, I'll repeat what I said on the earlier post about this bill:

As for whether it's a priority, it's worth understanding that Congress doesn't always work on the biggest and most important stuff first. Like all of us, sometimes you quickly check off the fast and easy stuff on your to-do list...

ROFL - OMG thank you for posting that, Kari; you have brightened my day. (And props to Earl for taking the ribbing for a good bill!)

  • (Show?)

"best line" as in, "showed what an idiot he is?" Or does he believe chimps are indigenous to CT?

  • (Show?)

Wasn't there once this bit of advice for politicians: Just don't get caught with a live boy or a dead monkey?

The Humane Society seemed to think it was an important piece of legislation.

"The Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Legislative Fund expressed thanks and appreciation to Reps. Blumenauer and Kirk for introducing the bill, and to Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife Subcommittee Chairwoman Madeleine Bordallo, D-Guam, and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall, D-W.V., for their leadership in bringing the measure to the House floor so expeditiously.

'There is no reason for any private citizen to keep a primate as a pet, and this trade is driven by unscrupulous dealers who sell primates across state lines for thousands of dollars," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. "Congressional action on this animal welfare and public safety issue will complement our efforts at the state level to dry up the trade and the practice of private ownership of chimps and other primates.'"

"Impacted" as a verb. Man that kills me.

  • (Show?)

Blumie's bill does NOT go far enough. Anyone greedy enough to market wild animals as pets belongs in jail. Those who are stupid enough to buy or keep one are just plain nuts and require therapy.

  • (Show?)

"Impacted" apes can be REALLY dangerous, Jeff!

This post and its comments have convinced me that there is no amount of Democratic silliness that Blue Oregon will not support.

I'm stilling waiting for Ashton to pop up and tell Earl that he's been Punk'd.

What does Earl and Stewart have against Thelonious Monks?

    Oh.. wait...

And no substance, no matter how central to everything, that they won't ignore. Exception for Jamais, who is always thoroughly enjoyable in balance.

BlueOregon doesn't support anything. It doesn't endorse anything. It doesn't have any opinions. After all, BlueOregon is nothing more than some pixels on a screen and some bytes on a server.

As for me, personally, I think this bill is an excellent reform. As Lee Coleman notes, there's no reason for anyone to keep a wild animal as a pet.

Frankly, I was kind of surprised to hear that this wasn't already the law.

And no, it's not the most important thing in the universe - but you know what? That's OK. There's lots of bandwidth to get needed things done that aren't the most important in the universe.
