Republican files to run against Wu; District yawns

Carla Axtman

Robert_cornillesSome guy named Rob Cornilles wants to be my Congressman.

The O:

A Tualatin sports business consultant announced today he will run for Congress, hoping to oust Democratic U.S. Rep. David Wu in next year's general election.

Rob Cornilles, a Republican, told The Oregonian he's entering the race out of concern for the fiscal policies supported by Wu and his Democratic colleagues in Congress.

Wu, he said, "is contributing to a spending spree right now that is racking up a debt and a deficit that is going to adversely affect our community for years to come."

I am not Wu's biggest fan. But c'mon...really, Rob? That's what you're gonna run your campaign on? You're gonna blame Wu for the massive economic problems brought on and implemented under Republican regimes?

If you're gonna go after Wu, you'd be better off dinging him for his horrible votes against consumers or bizarre Star Trek references.

I don't get the sense that the First Congressional District is in much of a mood for more conservative Republican pap.

Jeez.

Apparently Cornilles has lots of "influential friends and clients in all leagues and associations". I guess he also does (or has done) lots of executive training.

Here's the requisite slobbering on him at Portland Business Journal, too.

Unless this guy can actually come up with something besides the worn out GOP leftovers from the Reagan mess, there's not much here.

Geesh... there's not a congressional district in the US today that isn't yawning about new candidate filings for a 2010 election. So what?

This guy may be a complete sap, I don't know. If so, both candidates are about even on that front. I doubt Wu is going to run unopposed - and I further doubt Carla's approval of the choice of candidate is going to be sought out.

We'll see what kind of mood the First Congressional District is in a little over 13 months from now. Anyone posturing to omnipotently declare anything today is just talking to hear themselves talk. Yawn!

Which obviously is not what you're doing.

Is anyone at BlueOregon going to comment on the opinion piece Former Mayor Tom Potter wrote to Just Out that has been all over the Oregonian about Mayor Adams?? Pretty big news. Call my crazy...but it's at lEAST as big as Wu's random 'R' opponent 18 months away.

Katie, I'm sure if someone decides they care about it, they'll write about it. Meanwhile, the guest column link is right there.

p.s. You might not know this, but this isn't a newspaper of record. It's a blog. Each of us writes about stuff we care about. We don't even attempt to cover all the news that's fit to print.

    1. None of them are my district. This one is.

    2. The premise that every district filing is boring right now is dumb and false. This filing is particularly lacking in any real interest. I can't even find it in the local town newspapers (Beaverton Valley Times, Hillsboro Argus, Forest Grove whatevertheycallit, etc).

It would be hard to imagine that this guy could possibly be worse than Derrick Kitts. That guy was an embarassment to the legislature. I got to routinely watch him throw temper tantrums in the hallways of the capitol. Even the janitors in the building laughed at him.

Wu can just shoot him with his phaser.

The absence of credible challengers for Wu's seat has always mystified me. Maybe this is an early signal that he's going to find some competition this year.

Uh, I thought the Star Trek comment was fabulous. But then, I once wrote in "James T. Kirk" on a ballot for a presidential race in which I couldn't cast a sincere vote for any of the "real" candidates.

  • (Show?)

I agree completely with Lynne. In a nation in which 67% of the public can't even name their own Congressional representative, an occasional colorful reference really doesn't hurt, especially if it's illustrative.

I will say that the bankruptcy legislation was horrible, and Congressman Wu should not have supported it. Still, every representative has disappointed me from one time or another, but I'm enough of a grownup to realize that this will always be the case.

He's a great fundraiser. Otherwise he's pretty inept as a congressman but he can bring in the money. Nobody wants to run against that.

Wu, he said, "is contributing to a spending spree right now that is racking up a debt and a deficit that is going to adversely affect our community for years to come."

And how will this guy answer:

"So where were you when the Republicans took total control of DC --not only White House but Congress--and built this huge deficit and debt with tax cuts in a time of war and other spending?

2001, GW Bush inherited a balanced budget and projected surplus, which he gave away as tax cuts.

    What did Obama inherit?

Or are you one of those Republicans who says it doesn't matter what Republicans do when they control Congress, everything is always the fault of Democrats, even when they are in minority?

Amd you want to be taken seriously? Go talk to Walden and let him tell you what Congress is really like. "

I seem to recall Goli Ameri doing a decent amount of fundraising in 2004, and getting many large contributions from Texas and elsewhere. Ameri got a bump when the story broke about Wu's alleged past attempted rape incident, but she made too big a deal out of it and it blew her whole campaign. Granted, the last couple of challengers, including Kitts, left much to be desired. I also seem to recall the Republican Party being less than enthused about the guy who ran last time. Voters were equally unimpressed with the fellow, whose name escapes me at the moment (I could look it up, but my stomach has declared that it's lunchtime).

Well, certain Blue Oregon editors can definitely be targeted for their ignorance of WaCo. But man, I'm all about East Portland.

Wu might suck as a congressman (I think most agree on that), but keep in mind that the demographics and registration in his district have changed considerably over the years. Washington county used to be pretty evenly split D/R,but it's quickly becoming the next Multnomah county. Look at the '08 results, Jeff Merkley beat Smith in Washington county by several points....a few years back there's no way that the most liberal, partisan member of the legislature would have come close to beating a moderate, well-established Republican in that county...no chance. But the county has changed drastically and it is becoming a solid Democrat stronghold.
The fact is that unless Wu is taken out in a primary, he will keep his seat...beyond Walden's district, no Republican can win any other congressional seat in Oregon, regardless of who the candidates are. Oregon is a one-party state and its not turning back...if the Dems don't like Wu, take him out in May..he can't lose in November.

Wu's Klingon reference I always thought was also about a book published around that time about Cheney, Rumsfeld et al. called The Rise of the Vulcans. Admittedly it's still a little weird to feel the need to defend a fictional alien species, but it didn't come out of nowhere ...

All I can say is thank god someone is going to run against this steaming lump of a man who is on the wrong side of every single issue... especially immigration. He certainly hasn't been effective at all and he has not voted in line with his constituency. How is it possible to be in office as long as this loser and not be able to do anything ...even if it was just by mistake ...even John Kerry ended up on one or two good pieces of legislation by hanging around as long as he has ...good riddance I dont care who runs as long as they beat this guy

Wow. I am ever so impressed by the complete lack of intelligent conversation here. Blows me away. Really. And the way you all have opinions about the man running against Wu~ all this lovely yawning and brushing him aside like an inconsequential dust bunny when you don't know a thing about him is really quite stunning as well. applause You guys really know progress, don't you? Perhaps you should continue yawning through the next election~ take a sleeping pill or two in fact~ so we don't have to worry about such uninformed and biased voters checking any boxes when it comes time to vote. I think I'll take my "progress" with a side of critical thinking, and objectivity. To go. (and can I get one of those nifty Star Trek toys too?)

"the worn out GOP leftovers from the Reagan mess" Wow is that an inaccurate statement Carla. Please go look at a graph of the Dow Jones Industrials. Reagen launched the greatest economic expansion in decades!

Also, Mr. Cornilles is correct about Wu and the debt. Wu voted for the healthcare legislation. Please go lookup the Ap article release today: "Report says health care will cover more, cost more" HHS says this law is going to break the bank. Turns out no unicorns and rainbows... hmmm...
