In a move certain to be seen as a way to save the Oregon GOP from pending doom, perennial candidate Kevin Mannix announced today that he's running for Lt. Governor of Oregon. From his announcement email:

MANNIX LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Salem, OR -- With backing from dozens of supporters, Kevin Mannix today declared his intent to launch a campaign for the position of Lieutenant Governor of Oregon in the 2010 election.

"I believe my political aspirations have finally found an appropriate target: Lieutenant Governor, a position in which I can help make a meaningful difference for the people of Oregon," declared Mannix. "I'm proud to say my campaign will have support across the full spectrum of the rural law enforcement community. By starting early, I'm certain we will bring together corrections officials and district attorneys from coastal, southern and eastern Oregon to create a winning campaign."

Mannix will benefit from double-digit name familiarity built through five previous campaigns:

1996 Attorney General

2000 Attorney General

2002 Governor

2006 Governor

2008 5th Congressional District

"They say you can't learn if you don't try and then fail once in a while," said Mannix. "I believe I am living proof that there's always something left to learn in politics."

“Some people might say that the office of Lieutenant Governor is largely ceremonial, but that’s exactly what they said about Citizen Advocate,” added Mannix.

As he has done in the past, Mannix has filed several tough-on-crime ballot measures to help build support for his political campaign. Kevin Mannix proudly serves as chief petitioner on two measures for 2010 (initiative petitions 13 and 14) increasing penalties for certain sex offenders and driving under the influence.

"Someone needs to send a clear message to lawmakers in Salem that sexual predation and driving under the influence are just plain wrong," said Mannix.

"Through this campaign, I'm confident that voters will come to see that I am the best possible person to fulfill the responsibilities of Lieutenant Governor."

That's the best April Fool's Day joke you could think of?

As a lifelong Republican... Kevin... please, please go softly into that good night.

I got this by email too -- not sure who sent it.

Clicked on the Lt. Gov. link--anyone else notice Oregon is not on any chart?

I wanted to see what picture they would have of Kate Brown as next in line of succession.

    Great April Fools joke.

Loved this. But isn't the office of Governor largely ceremonial these days as well?

Thanks--you brought a smile to my face with this one!

Perhaps he'll weigh in on the Portland City Council's controversial proposal to run beer through Skidmore Fountain, in fulfillment of Henry Weinhard's 122-year-old offer.

My sources suggest Mannix lusts to become Chancellor of the Exchequer.

You see his website? He really calls himself Citizen Advocate, like its a real office and everything!

    Awesome stuff.

oh boy, i can't wait to see the Mannix-John Lim Lt Gov Smackdown. cuz Lim is serious about this gig. and now that Greg Matthews has whupped his ass, he's gotta find something to do.

  • (Show?)

Sorry, but I'm already supporting Ron Saxton's campaign for Lt. Governor.

Alas, why won't Greg Walden run for Lt. Gov.? I know about 2/3rds of the voters here in the second CD, being so well educated regarding civics, would in fact vote for him for that position.

    Alas, unfulfilled dreams....

Have no fear friends, we shall nominate t.a. barnhart to fend off Kevin Mannix and Lim

On the Democratic side, I hear Walker and Avakian have been running for months, with unfortunately no contributions or endorsements to show for it.

DeFazio is apparently upset that no one mentioned his name, so he put out a press release denying interest.

Bill Bradbury wanted to run, but is already term limited out of ceremonial offices.

Meanwhile, Novick has already locked up the coveted Imaginary Friends of Amanda Fritz endorsement.

Should be a hell of a race. All depends on who the WillyWeek endorses.

At first this didn't make sense, but Kev is calculating so I looked deeper.

I think the Reps' plan is to get people really familiar and tired of Mannix, really early, so that he can support a very moderate GOP gubernatorial candidate. That automatically means pro-choice, so they're already planning to say, "but look at Mannix' position", to allow them to place both sides of the fence.

Seriously - Was Mannix a Democrat the last time he won an election?

Mannix turned me off when he did the Abortion letter thing with Erickson!

He reminds me of a Sicilian catholic that has to kill a chicken, so as not to lose face after a Sicilian wedding night.

I am waiting for him to use a yard stick on my knuckles for just thinking liberal thoughts!

Hmmm.... Leonard Cohen had some thoughts about the future.

    Viz.....

Give me back my broken night my mirrored room, my secret life it's lonely here, there's no one left to torture Give me absolute control over every living soul And lie beside me, baby, that's an order!

Give me crack and anal sex Take the only tree that's left and stuff it up the hole in your culture Give me back the Berlin wall give me Stalin and St Paul I've seen the future, brother: it is murder.

Things are going to slide, slide in all directions Won't be nothing Nothing you can measure anymore

I've seen the nations rise and fall I've heard their stories, heard them all but love's the only engine of survival Your servant here, he has been told to say it clear, to say it cold: It's over, it ain't going any further

There'll be the breaking of the ancient western code Your private life will suddenly explode There'll be phantoms There'll be fires on the road and the white man dancing You'll see a woman hanging upside down her features covered by her fallen gown and all the lousy little poets coming round tryin' to sound like Charlie Manson and the white man dancin'

Give me back the Berlin wall Give me Stalin and St Paul Give me Christ or give me Hiroshima

    Stay focused non-Republicans.

i'm not running on a full tank, Carl. i knew this was a prank, as my Lim-for-real comment was meant to indicate. but i sure did sound like i bought it. sheesh.

still, given the nature of the office and the possibilities of this race, it would be an honor to represent the Raving Pinko Left-Coast Loons against Mannix. i figure against him, even i can't lose.

I hear there are plans in the works to unveil a new perennial: the Mannix Rose.

  • A rose by any other name (unverified)

Ah yes: a perennial but non-blooming varietal. Just spread manure and watch it grow!

Careful of the thorns, of course.

Sorry, no bites on that one Carla. Picking on poor Kevin, now that's just low. You should have used Bill Sizemore instead.

  • (Show?)

To be clear: Carla didn't write the press release. It really did land in mailboxes all over Oregon. It came from an anon gmail account.

Personally, I'd suggest a Sizemore/Mannix dream ticket, but only as a 2nd choice. My first choice would be Stephan Andrew Brodhead and Glenn Beck.
