This just in: "Widespread fraud and forgery" has been found in the petitions seeking to qualify Ralph Nader for the Oregon ballot, according to an investigation by an Oregon labor union.

A press conference is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. PST on Monday. No external links available yet, but we'll be posting them here as they become available after the press conference. For now, the text of the press release from SEIU Local 49...

Widespread fraud and forgery found on petitions to qualify Ralph Nader for Presidential Ballot in Oregon
The petition sheets to qualify Ralph Nader for the presidential ballot in Oregon contain so much fraud, forgery and duplicated signatures that it clearly demonstrates widespread corruption in the campaign, according to an investigation conducted by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
SEIU will release preliminary findings of its investigation at a news conference on Monday, August 16th at 10:30 AM. At that time, we will be calling on the Ralph Nader campaign to take immediate action to eliminate the fraud and to report all individuals who have violated state election laws while working on the campaign.
"We were absolutely astounded by what we have found so far," says SEIU International Vice-President Alice Dale. " The evidence of systemic fraud is clear and convincing and goes beyond anything we have seen before in Oregon. We call on the Ralph Nader for President campaign to immediately stop all fraudulent activities and turn over all evidence of fraud and forgery to the state Elections Division for investigation by the Attorney General."

When this news spreads, do you think it will mean that Oregon's gift to the country this year will be the national unraveling of the Nader candidacy?

I sincerely hope SEIU is mistaken; I would be sorry to see the Kafoury name lose the luster earned by years of decency and public service. It was bad enough when the Naito name fell, but that was due to an unavoidable loss of vision after Bill Naito's death, and not to unAmerican, unOregonian behavior.

No court found Nader guilty of fraud. Progressive agressive warmongering anti-democratic, anti-constitutional and unamerican frauds, who have the gall to call themselves democrats, employ sensational propeganda to inspire fear and hate. SHAME ON YOU!

I'm sorry for Mr. Nader because I really like him... at the same time I hope the accusations are true. Bush must be stopped! Mr. Nader has no real chance of winning, but he could tip the balance in favor of Bush. That would be very bad.

Well, Jeanette, I don't know that the Democrats are responsible for voter fraud. It's also a testament of the ideological drift of the Nader campaign that a labor union, of all things, is now the entity fingering the anti-corporate crusader.

Jeanette, My neighbor's address was used on a petition for Nader's candidacy despite the fact that it was not her name or signature on the petition. That kind of activity by the Nader petitioners is downright fraudulent. How in the world you call someone who detects and reports that kind of illegal behavior unAmerican is beyond me.

It certainly isn't a testament to Nader's ideological drift. It is more a testament to the drift away from a genuine ideology of the democrats and their union pals. Nader looks like being another casualty of their win at all costs approach.

This highlights why I would never join a union. What the hell are the Service Employees International Union doing spending money on a politically motivated study of Nader's petitions? How does this represent any of their members who aren't hellbent on seeing Kerry become the next president?

Such carping would make more sense if the democrats had to go through the same process as Nader, but they don't largely because they had a hand in making the rules up, as is the case in almost every state.

This is ludicrous. Citizens themselves have the responsibility to monitor civic processes, and that's precisely what SEIU Local 49 did.

Individual citizens have that right (and it is good that some, like you, take it as a responsibility), but unions only have a responsibility to their members.

This monitoring actually serves no purpose because the state has already shown itself to be strict in this area, and is hardly likely to be doing Nader any favours. It is merely a tactic to persuade people not to sign the petition, and is of no benefit to our democracy or to union members.

  • (Show?)

No, the state did not show itself to be strict in this area until SEIU and its fellow labor unions formed the Voter Education Project to investigate and publicize the activities of petition signature gatherers - many of which were felons convicted of identity theft and fraud. They connected the dots between criminal activity and election law. Of course, there are kudos to the state for picking up the ball and running with it - once VEP showed them the ball existed.

I can't believe that there are people who cling to Nader so tightly that they continue to willfully and blindly insist that getting on the ballot by any means necessarily does not fundamentally undermine the asserted intent of Nader's campaign. The former consumer rights activist tarnishes his reputation and insults everyone's intelligence when he does not denounce these tactics... hmmm... not unlike a certain Republican....
