Dick Cheney in 2008?
No one has had better sources in the two Bush administrations - especially at the Pentagon - than Bob Woodward. (Books: Plan of Attack, Bush at War, The Commanders)
The Denver Post quotes Woodward saying this about a presidential run by Dick Cheney:
"He would be 67 if he ran and was elected. Reagan was 69. Republicans always like the old warhorse. ... Nixon was 68," said Woodward, best known for exposing the Watergate scandal that led to Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974. "Both parties like to nominate vice presidents. ... Cheney would do it, and I think it's highly likely, so stay tuned."

My perception is that Cheney won't run, I don't know where (or when) I picked that up. I'm almost sure I heard him say at one point he would never run for president. Not that is isn't president already! Another factor would be his health, which has never been that great.
I recently got to watch the last episode of The West Wing from this season and had a good laugh, as did all WW fans. A character who's name is Leo McGarry was nominated for VP. McGarry's background is that he had both a drug and alcohol problem as well as suffering a major heart attack. Isn't it funny how in this case isn't reality that is shaping an idea for TV instead of the other way around.

I thought (according to 2000 and 2004) that most Americans chose their President based on who they'd most like to have a beer with. What are they thinking?!
Cheney's probably never had a beer in his life. And he's not exactly a ray of sunshine when completely sober, either, so I can't imagine how mean a drunk he'd be.
Seriously, I'm not even worried about 08 when 06 is just around the corner. It's about Congress, governorships, and state legislatures for now.

Bushies wish he would at least say he's running. That would compelling Congressional GOPpers to pay attention to Bush's agenda. Already Frist is jumping ship in prep for 2008, and that's just the start. Bush, over a year before the midterm elections, already looks irrelevant. Three years not controlling the agenda is a long time.
If Cheney's allowing this kind of talk, it's because he wants to keep Bush's capital from sliding into the negatives. I'd be shocked if Cheney has ever considered it as a serious possibility. Though given his manifold weaknesses, I guess it wouldn't be such a bad thing.
