Thinking of Running for Office?

By Rep. Peter Buckley (D-Ashland). Peter is the Assistant Democratic Leader in the Oregon House.

The House Democratic Leadership Forum is seeking Oregonians from every county and all walks of life to be part of a constant statewide candidate recruitment and support effort. We need diversity, drive and a passion for helping to create the future not only for our party, but for our state as well.

We want nurses, firefighters, teachers, police, small business owners, National Guard members, farmers, farm workers, activists, regular folks, and even reformed Republicans. Our caucus has great members, and we want more!

The Forum will send out a monthly email newsletter with House Dem news and events, and will serve as the lead coordinator for long-term recruitment. If you think you might someday be a candidate for the House (even in 2006), or if you know people in your community, your organization or your workplace who would be great state representatives, jump into the Forum and help us build.

Stay informed and keep us informed, that's the bottom line.

We won't overwhelm you with emails--there will be one newsletter each month. But we will be ready at all times to be a resource to every candidate or potential candidate in the state in 2006, 2008, 2010 and onward.

If you would like to receive the newsletter and be part of the ongoing effort to build, please email [email protected] to subscribe. If you know of others who might be interested in and supportive of the effort to take back the Oregon House and sustain a Democratic majority, please feel free to suggest that they contact us to sign up for the monthly missives as well.

If you are considering a run for the House in 2006, make sure we know about it--let us answer any and all questions you might have and help get your campaign started off right. In our next newsletter, we will provide information on the resources that will be available to ALL Democratic campaigns in 2006, including training in fund raising, media relations and issue background.

Your energy, ideas, suggested contacts and support are vitally needed in our push to Majority and Beyond!

Fantastic! Thanks so much, Rep. Buckley and the Dem caucus! My district is already ably represented by Mary Nolan, but I will definitely sign on, and support in any way I can.

There's something about that paragraph that sticks in my craw. This appeal to the "regular folks" smacks of smarminess, if not outright cynicism. Evidently, you don't want lawyers, though back when the legislature had more lawyers than it does today, it wrote better laws. We've also had at least a couple of college professors who did quite well.

Is anyone else getting tired of the proposition that you have to be rural and working class to be a person of substance.

Oh, and by the way, I fit at least five of the categories in that first paragraph, but my scandalous past disqualifies me from any thought of running for office.
