The Minnis File: Seriously disturbing

This morning, voters in East Multnomah County started seeing television commercials with a serious and disturbing revelation about Karen Minnis - and her actions ten years ago.

The details and documentation are all available at TheMinnisFile.com. Though entirely public record, voters have never known the story before today:

Karen Minnis and her husband protected Tuck Minnis after he allegedly attempted to rape a 17-year-old girl -- an employee at their pizza restaurant in Hillsboro.

Karen Minnis and her husband -- a police officer -- chose not to believe the girl's allegations. There is no indication that they reported their teenage employee's charge to proper authorities.

Then, Karen Minnis and her husband paid $20,000 to try to make the case go away.

They kept the alleged attacker -- Karen Minnis' brother-in-law -- on their payroll for six more months. He was even living at their home when he was convicted later that year for public indecency and harassment.

We'll update here with news coverage, video of the spot, and reaction as it becomes available.

This is disturbing. She doesn't even understand the concept of accountability.

I find it beneath contempt that you 'blue' folks would hold the actions of Speaker Minnis' brother in law against her. Where in God's name did you come up with these sleazy tactics--have you no shame??

  • Ian (unverified)
    (Show?)

Jimbo, what is sleazy is the fact that Karen and John paid 20,000.00 to make the case go away. You are missing the point that John and Karen tried to cover up the whole thing. No one is blaming Karen or John for the attempted rape. The efforts to make the rape case go away is the issue here.

    She covered it up.

    Hey jimbo:

Uh, dumbass, it's not the brother in law's actions being held against her, it's her hypocritical non-response; her complete fundamental lack of leadership. Read it, dipshit.

Why isn't video available. Hello, all her smear shit against Brading's youtubed, isn't it?

  • Dan (unverified)
    (Show?)

The allegation here is not that Speaker Minnis sexually assaulted someone herself, but that she ignored, excused, covered up, and failed to report the sexual assault. And then she made her workplace so miserable for the young woman that she had to quit. All while she she continued to employ (and even house) her assaulting brother-in-law.

If she and her husband are truly without fault, why would they pay $20,000 to the young woman?

For someone who claims she stands up for kids, this news about Speaker Minnis is concerning. For someone who claims she is tough on crime, it's amazing. For someone who claims she is all about Christ-like family values, it's appalling.

Well, at least Tuck's not GAY! Beause if he was GAY then Minnis, Nashif, Becky, Tuuni, etc. could very self-righteously condemn him straight to hell!

I will bet you ONE BILLION DOLLARS that Manning, Nashif, Becky, Tuuni will either (i) refuse to comment, or (ii) take Minnis' side and attack the victim.

    Lying hypocritical scumbags.

Am I misssing something here? Isn't this a case of a cop who is now in charge of police training being involved with a cover-up of his brother's criminal activity from some years ago? bluetick

  • (Show?)

bluetick: bingo! But his wife was involved with the settlements and of course the business.

From the Minnis website...bio section: "During her legislative service, Speaker Minnis has been a passionate advocate for children and they have always been foremost in her mind. In 2005 she continued her work to secure the health and safety of children by authoring and passing legislation protecting children from abusers and sex offenders."

    Unbelievable hypocrisy.

  • (Show?)

The dark side of human nature rears it's ugly head to find Karen Minnis using distortions and falsehoods again. As if her 3 unreported trips paid by lobbists were not enough, now we have her incredible hypocricy. It's all about her greed and needs, not about the protection of a traumatized young girl who had the guts to take the offender to court. John Minnis and Karen Minnis used their respective positions to cover up for John's brother. Can you say dirty cop? Can you call Karen Minnis truthful? Will the big "O" write a timely editorial? I'm not holding my breath.

A back-up plan other than the commericals that are now running in the district, you mean?

They just fired a Multnomah County deputy for not reporting child abuse as required by law. John Minnis, who's in charge of police training, and Queen Karen, who writes the laws, should be held to at least that standard of accountablity, if not more.

With training and oversight like that, is it any wonder people get stomped to death for allegedly pissing in the street?

  • (Show?)

Come on folks if you are going to report this, at least have the courtesy to black out the minor's (at the time) name.

Dem -- all those records are public records. It's all sitting there just waiting to be googled.

I am glad to read that some of you will be supporting criminal charges being brought forward on Officer Bernie knowing about Neil's raping a 14 year old girl.

  • Anon (unverified)
    (Show?)

Poor lw. Last I checked, Neil was not on the Ballot. Minnis is.

If LW is saying that the wrongs of any member of a party are imputed in full to all other members - I dont' think he's going to like how that game ends up on the Republican side. Foley. Abramoff. Ney. Cunningham. DeLay. Gannon. Libby. Lay...

LW knows that the loathesome Karen Minnis has been caught in a trap of her own making. Her supporters can shriek all they want about this person or that person - it won't change the facts of what Minnis has done.

You can excuse and justify all you want ruining a families life with these kinds of last minute lies just because you don't agree with their politics. It will soon become clear that the new Brading spot is distortions and lies. You will all either make yourselves believe that it is true or you will say that the end justifies the means or you will just be glad the Minnises are gone. However you choose to deceive yourselves it won't change the truth. You all have become just like what you say you hate. Your pitiful!

    Jackie - start with this:

Vega, Guardian v. Little John's Pizza Co., Tuck Minnis, and John Minnis, Washington County Circuit Court Case C951033CV, and continue with the other documents filed with the Court, which can all be found here.

Don't try to tell me about distortions and lies when the facts are a matter of public record.

If you really want to talk about distortions and lies, go have lunch with Chuck Adams. He's the expert.

  • Anon (unverified)
    (Show?)

    Jackie,

Chuck Admas has been Minnis' campaign advisor for years. He's the one behind the "SafeLibraries" smear job. Here's a little background on him from Rogue of the Week, May 2000:

But Adams' most troubling tactic came in Salem's mayoral race, where he worked for challenger Glenn Wheeler against incumbent Mike Swaim.

Behind Wheeler's back, Salem ophthalmologist Gordon Miller paid for--and Adams produced--an ugly "independent" hit piece against Swaim.

Election laws about independent expenditures are crystal clear: There has to be a brick wall between the candidate and any advertising that's paid for by an outside party. But Adams was working as an agent for both the candidate and the good doctor. Wheeler just barely avoided a state investigation by reporting the flier as an in-kind contribution to his campaign.

This is hardly the first time Adams has been accused of sleazy tactics. In 1994, he was charged with instructing a campaign worker to lie on an initiative petition--a felony. The charge was reduced to a misdemeanor and he got two years' probation. Two years later, he designed a brochure for Gianella with a photograph of an armed black teenager with the caption, "Welcome to the neighborhood."
