Action Alert! Tell the nation that the Simpsons are from Oregon.
elsewhere

Bart_and_homerAt Blog for Oregon, Jenni Simonis brings news of an important action alert.

It seems that the Simpsons are about to reveal which Springfield is the true home of the Simpsons. There are Springfields in Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana, Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and - of course - Oregon.

Everyone in Oregon knows that the Simpsons are from Oregon.

Now, we just have to tell the rest of the world.

Right now, go vote. Bring the Simpsons home to Oregon. (The vote doesn't require any personal information, just click on the star marked "Oregon")

Do it now.

Update: Moments after this post went up, Governor Kulongoski urged Oregonians to vote for Springfield, Oregon.

Today Governor Ted Kulongoski encouraged his fellow citizens to support Springfield, Oregon’s bid to host the premiere of The Simpsons Movie by casting their vote online by July 9.

“With Simpsons creator Matt Groening a native Oregonian and references to our state littered across the show, I think it is clear that the Simpson’s Springfield is Springfield, Oregon,” said Governor Kulongoski. “In Oregon we have always held a special place in our hearts for the Simpsons family and it would be an honor to welcome them home for their movie debut. I encourage all Oregonians to join me in voting for our Springfield.”

Discuss.

I placed my vote for Oregon, but didn't I hear that Springfield's own mayor hadn't heard of the Simspons or wasn't interested in being represented?

I was just sent this from a friend. Guess this is one of the ad campaigns they're doing for the movie:

Simpsons

Thanks for the mention. I'd been on the lookout for this to start today, which is why I had it up so quick.

I hadn't heard of Oregon's Springfield mayor saying that. But there was one in another state that said that. He said it was an insult to their city to compare it to the Simpsons' Springfield.

Our Springfield mayor is 110% behind having the movie premiered here. The interested cities were to make a short movie to be sent to the producers showing why their Springfield should be "The" Springfield. Mayor Leiken got behind this effort all the way. Helping to put together the movie committee and ensure that they had the city government's support. Even to go as far as having a couple of the cities statues in Island park painted "Simpson's yellow" and in all his public appearances advocating for the movie premiere he now sports a Mayor "sash" just like Mayor Quimby in the show.

Hey Blue Oregon!
Thank you for your support! Remember, you can vote once each day...so early and often.
And to answer the comment by LiberalIncarnate: Since accepting 20th Cent. Fox's invitation, I think Mayor Leiken has been the most visable Mayor. He appears in our video,he held a night for Simpsons fans at our community theater and even painted the horse at the City's entryway yellow. It was his idea to contact Tony Hawk, so he is very pumped! You can see some photos at www.myspace.com/springfieldoregon
Thanks for your votes! I just want to make sure you all know we took this seriously.

Okay, I dutifully cast my vote…but please, I beg of you, don't EVER ask me to go to such a hideous web site again! My eyes, and my computer may never recover.

I've always liked the Simpsons. Funny. Irreverant.

But to vote on which Springfield is the real Springfield? I can't think of something less important to think about right now.

I guess for some reason I can't stop thinking about people getting killed in Iraq right now and a very stupid and hopefully impeached president in the white house. just baffles me that people would spend time on this, or care about it, really.

now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

didn't I hear that Springfield's own mayor hadn't heard of the Simspons or wasn't interested in being represented?

I guess that means you haven't watched the video featuring Springfield, Oregon? Sheesh... Mayor Leiken even has a helpful "Mayor" sash across his chest, and a very menacing looking Secret Service agent.

(FYI - this is the guy that Peter DeFazio should be worried about.)

Springfield Oregon's mayor was IN the video!

Like I said, I think they're just getting it confused.

From the story about the contest:

But folks in Springfield, Ore., the home state of "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, always thought it was their Springfield on the Fox TV show. "It was a shock, that we had to prove it," said Niel Laudati, community relations coordinator.

Every Springfield in the nation was invited to take part, submitting a three- to five-minute video showcasing their towns. Some had a cow over the idea.

Springfield, Minn., declined, saying it was nothing like the dysfunctional town on the TV show.

I'm an ex-Springfield guy and I have to ask... Where would you host the event? All of the main convention and spectator facilities are in Eugene, which wouldn't really be fair, even if most of the tourism dollars generated by the event landed in Eugene. So where do you do it?

Well there's the Double Tree (I think, it was Red Lion) ballroom at I-5 and Beltline, but that's only 2000 people and the ceiling is quite low. There two high school gyms and football stadiums. I guess that's a pretty Simpsons way of doing it and you would almost have to play up the quirky side.

It would be a major coup for Springfield and Lane County. If they play their cards right they could turn it into a huge Simpson convention with banners all over, a collectibles swap meet, live music with covers of all the Simpsons musical guests and screen projections in the background. Imagine a beer garden and contracting with a local brewery to bottle Duff's beer. That would be fun and it would draw international attention to Springfield. It would be the most exciting thing to happen to Springfield... Uhhh.... Well.... Since John Belushi did the scene out by Fall Creek.... Or... Uh... Hmmm... We're not counting shooting spree murders, so... I guess since Lita Ford (80s chick rocker and ex-Runaway with Joan Jett) filmed her debut video scene "Out For Blood" walking down Main Street in Springfield.

Ted

You have not been in Springfield in a long time. The Double Tree is no longer and is now a retail center anchored by Best Buy. They will host by contract, in a 17 theatre movieplex.

Yes, it is TRUE that Mayor Sid Leiken had never WATCHED a full episode of the Simpsons. Nor, by the way has Springfield School Board chair Laurie Adams. Now Laurie is a bit older, but doh! how does the mayor of Springfield avoid watching any complete episodes of the Simpsons? Ever? The guy is only like 43 or something. What was he doing in his 20s? Or even his 30s? (both were reported in the RG, but the URL is gone)

It is a sad state of affairs when the mayor of the supposed namesake never made the connection of "hey, maybe I should watch it". He might find it funny, and as a politician he certainly should get the jokes.

In any event, I'm glad he is behind it now, but criminy, how are we supposed to connect with young voters if this obvious generation gap was missed?

As an aside, Sid Leiken may have political ambitions beyond Springfield, but he should return to the Democratic party and let his light shine there. He is going to get taken for a ride by the Rs until he returns to his roots. Unless, he has all of sudden become a raging right wing conservative; cutting of women's rights to choose, banning civil unions, setting up Christian prayer circles, and attacking immigrants. If he thinks he can make advances as an R, he should really be ready to own that entire platform. I'd like to think better of my Mayor than that.

Sincerely,
Springfeldian over 40 who still watches the Simpsons

Springfield Oregon? Ick!!!!!!

I can't imagine that Groening would be terribly thrilled about premiering his flick in that disgusting red state conservative hell-hole.

Bryan

Do you know where Springfield Oregon is? I will let hometown democrats Peter DeFazio, Terry Beyer and Bill Morrisette know how you feel about their home.

Not to mention Bill Dwyer, current county commissioner and former State Senator and 4/7 precincts went for Kerry in '04, 2 by large margins. Springfield was also the only other Lane city to pass successive property tax increases and the original Lane County income tax (which was defeated county wide and then redefeated, it failed in ol' liberal Eugene both times)

Time to cast that stereotype aside.

Nudist Colony Boss here..I am so busy trying to keep Homer at his desk and out of the pool, sauna, hot tub and tennnis courts that I have not had time to urge people to vote. Please urge your friends, family and those in your address books to vote for Springfield, Oregon.
