Yes, we're listening! We've got Stop Gordon Smith flyers.
guest column

By Trent Lutz of Portland, Oregon. Trent is the executive director of the Democratic Party of Oregon.

At the state party, we're thrilled with the excitement and attention that BlueOregon readers are giving to the upcoming campaign to defeat Gordon Smith. And while we're waiting to see who the nominee is, we're not waiting to start the campaign to elect a better Senator to represent Oregon.

On an earlier BlueOregon article, we noticed these comments:

I wouldn't mind doing some door hangers right now. Maybe DPO could produce them and distribute them through the county offices? The door hangers should highlight Smith's "greatest hits", i.e., extreme mendacity and duplicity, with actual quotes, votes and dates. ...

Maybe handout flyers in front of/near WalMart, Target, etc. to get the back-to-school shoppers? ...

Great idea, anon! How should we go about getting something like that moving? I'd be more than willing to help.

If DPO cannot afford door hangers right now - an alternative may be to have DPO produce a flyer that we can download and copy for ourselves...

And that's a great idea. Over at StopGordonSmith.com, we've posted our first flyer that tells the truth about Gordon Smith's record. And stay tuned, we'll offer more as the campaign progresses.

Print it out. Hand it out. Let your community know that:

* Gordon Smith votes with President Bush 90 percent of the time
* Gordon Smith has a 15 percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America
* Gordon Smith has a 14 percent rating from the League of Conservation Voters
* Gordon Smith has voted more than 20 times to fund and authorize the Iraq War

More comprehensive voting information is available at StopGordonSmith.com.

Encourage your friends and family to visit the website, learn more about Gordon Smith’s record, and sign up for email alerts.

Thanks for your support.

Together, we can replace Gordon Smith with a senator who will represent Oregon values.

(p.s. If you want to volunteer your graphic design skills to help the DPO, please contact us. Please email us at info [at] dpo.org to let us know if you're willing to help out!)

I posted this on the stopgordonsmith.com site and I'll post it here.

According to the AFL-CIO, Smith has a 20% lifetime voting record on working families issues. In 2006 alone, he voted:

  • against a straightforward and long-overdue federal minimum wage increase;
  • in favor of enormous tax giveaways for the rich at the expense of students, seniors and the working poor;
  • in favor of expanding exploitative guest worker programs; and
  • in favor of making life just a little more difficult for the rest of us by helping employers privatize and offshore our good, family-wage jobs.

Yay! Thanks, Trent and DPO!

Information is great; however, it would be nice to have this in a 4-up as well. Then we can print 4 to a page, cut them down, and then hand them out to people. They'd be a lot easier to carry in a purse, day planner, etc. Plus you could reach three additional people with every page you print.

I'll pick up a few at the CC meeting on Saturday -- perhaps we can distribute them at the Washington County Fair

Thanks a bunch Trent for seeing the "grassroots" as something more than small donors.

Initiatives like this may be a bit slow in getting off the ground as it'll take us a while to adjust to a (hopefully) more cooperative and responsive DPO.

I'll do my part to get with our house district and county leaders to take advantage of this effort.

Door hanger marketing should really be pursued.

I specialize in the printing and graphic design of door hangers. What is interesting is the supreme power door hangers pocess.

The truth about a door hanger is it can not be ignored. Someone has to pull it off the door knob.

What becomes important is the excellence of your copy.

Good Luck
