As I wrote in Concession to Error is not Admission of Defeat ('93), "America" is the only place in the world where you can drive down a sedate suburban street and see signs spelling out DRUGS in four foot letters. We as a society are the most chemically dependent people in the world. Ambein, Prosaic, Viagra.
The next time you hear some rightwing pundit, a bimbo bottle-blonde bobble-head on teevee, suggesting someone has "Drank the Kool-Aid" ask yourselves what they are trying to project, or as the case may be, not. Where did "Drink the Kool-Aid come from? The commonly accepted Jonestown Incident, where five hundred or so half-witted fat white christian cultists first followed a charismatic leader to a "commune" in Guyana and then to suicide?
Nooooo...
It came from the sixties, and had to do with (then legal) experimentation with LSD. Yes, we were on DRUGS.
But we're not anymore. The Better Living Through Chemicals thing failed forty years ago.
When your Faux/CNN rightwing bobble-head is heaping scorn upon the object of their derision by suggesting said is a half-wit cultist blindly following a charismatic leader to suicide - hmmm... might have to rethink that one guys - what they're really trying to do is distract attention away from the fact that they are all ON DRUGS - Ambein, Prosaic, Viagra. Batshit crazy stoned out of their gourd 24/7 ON DRUGS.
The whole damned country is on drugs.

I absolutely agree with the gist of what Thomas says here, and which Brendan's cartoon alludes to. And it bears mentioning that our obsession with chemical fixes is one of the primary driving forces behind the out of control health care industry... and it is an industry!
However, I disagree that "drink the Kool-Aid" refers to the 60's drug culture rather than to the infamous Jonestown mass suicide. Having gotten deeply into the illicit drug scene during the 80's rather than the 60's, perhaps my perspective is fundamentally different than Thomas'. But while I would find the premise that the 60's drug culture may have had an influence on the phrase, particularly in Jim Jones' choice to use Kool-Aid and it's acceptance among his... devotees, that simply was not the mechanism of choice for ingesting psychedelics by my generation. When we heard "drank the Kool-Aid" we instantly understood it as a reference to Jonestown.

Good cartoon. It reminds me of what is most glaringly schizophrenic about "drugs" in our society. If you were to drink a gallon of THC, the active ingredient in pot that gets you high, at worst you might get an upset stomach (drinking a gallon of damn near anything would do that, even water).
If however you drank a gallon of alcohol, which anyone over the age of 21 can legally buy and pay taxes on, you would be dead within an hour or two.
If you were to put two DROPS of nicotine, which anyone over the age of 18 can legally buy and pay taxes on via a pack of cigs... you would be dead within 10 mins.
So non-toxic, nonpoisonous, non-lethal THC.. illegal. Toxic poisonous alcohol and nicotine... legal.
BTW, I don't smoke pot or cigs and am only a light social drinker, so it isn't even that I am against drinking or that I want to get pot made legal so I can fire up a doob (I have no interest in it).

Kids, i wouldn't try Mitch's experiment at home. The only studies i'm aware of suggest that oral ingestion of only 2-3 oz of pure THC would be expected to kill 50% of test subjects. It must have been a fun test... for a while.
Now i have heard rumors that pot makes the testicles of teenage boys shrink. Something to do with puberty and growth spurts. Mitch, can you confirm?

Brendan's Dystopia got a real leg up in the 60s and 70s too.
When I was in my early 20s, a friend's eight year old brother was on Desoxyn (speed) for ADD. The beginning in earnest of the chemical babysitter........
He grew up to be a meth dealer and did a couple of years in medium security in Ontario.
What a surprise, huh?

I was diagnosed with ADHD in my early 40's and put on Adderall with great results. For the first time in my life, I could sit still, find my keys (and purse and shoes and...), and see a big project through to its end, among other things.
And while I believe that meds for ADHD are probably over-prescribed, it is nonetheless, a legitimate - and debilitating - condition that many truly suffer from. I absolutely hate it when stuff like this comes out singling out ADHD because it invariably brings comments like that of Pat Ryan.
Studies show that children with ADHD who are medicated, do not develop drug abuse problems as often as those who are not. Those that do, are almost always self-medicating, either because they have not been diagnosed and do not know what their problem is, or because they are denied the legal medication that helps them.
And why would people be denied legal meds that 40+ years of experience and study has proven to be effective for many? Because uninformed people decide it's the same as meth, and has no legitimate medical use - especially for adults. I'm sick of being treated like a drug-seeking tweaker by those who know nothing of this condition.
So yeah, BigPharma pushes WAY too many drugs. But can we please stop picking on ADHD? Why not focus on stuff like the new drug Miraplex for that horribly debilitating condition, Restless Leg Syndrome? Not only can this new wonder drug cause you to fall asleep during normal activities like driving (Ambien, anyone?) but the commercial also warns that you should "contact your doctor if you experience gambling, sexual or other intense urges!"

It's only been since 1999 that big pharma companies have been allowed to advertise prescription drugs on TV....seems longer, doesn't it? (But without these ads I never would have noticed the bugs thriving under my toenails.) Within 3 years the number of prescriptions being written in the USA jumped by 80%, and HMO and traditional health insurance policy premiums began to skyrocket.
It's ALL about money. The likelihood of pot being legalized is about the same as finding a way to grow Paxil in your back yard.
