Congresswoman Darlene Hooley: "It is a cause worth fighting for."
The official opening of Hillary Clinton's Portland campaign office drew a crowd of supporters downtown tonight. The campaign staff - which will be growing throughout the state with seven offices - were all-hands-on-deck signing up volunteers, checking off items on the office wish list, and training everyone on the phone system.
Congresswoman Darlene Hooley, U.S. Representative for Oregon's 5th District, urged supporters on with a speech detailing why she is committed to Senator Clinton's historic run for the Presidency. Echoing one of the staffer's given reasons for supporting Hillary - "to change the world" - Hooley celebrated the opportunity that Clinton supporters have in Oregon.
"For the first time in decades, Oregon's vote will make a difference," she said to enthusiastic applause and cheers of support.
Hooley celebrated the chance "to elect the first woman President of the United States. [Some may say] oh you're just for her because she's a woman - well I'm thrilled that she's a woman but I'm voting for her because she knows how to do the job."
Hooley related an account of several congressional representatives going to the White House during the administration of Bill Clinton to discuss a contentious issue. The President was unavailable, so Hillary Clinton met them, apologizing for the President's absence but then delving into the issues. The group went away deeply impressed not only with Hillary's knowledge and sincerity on the issues but also with her ability to diffuse contention.
"To me," she explained, "that's a person who knows how to get things done in the system.... Her breadth of knowledge, her depth of knowledge and understanding is incredible."
Hooley stressed her feeling, shared by Hillary's supporters, that Senator Clinton is the most qualified and capable candidate for President in the race, and that working for her cause means to work for the best possible President we can elect in 2008.
"I'd like to see our economy grow, and again I think that Senator Clinton is the only one who knows how to get that done."
"I can't think of a better person to be President than Hillary Rodham Clinton."
Congresswoman Hooley urged all Hillary supporters to "believe that we can make this happen in this state. It is a cause worth fighting for."

Ah, this was effortless, Kristin. All credit goes to the good congresswoman. Rumors of my suicide - and my candidate's - have been greatly exaggerated. :-D

"OK, Chris -- you...Charlie Burr...celebrity death match....right now"
Maybe you guys can stop give Merkley a personality implant and help him catch up with Novick (c.f. KATU's poll - which I am sure everyone will declare wildly inaccurate).

Not I, certainly.

Seems to me that that poll deserves an "in the news" post.

Chris...joke....ha ha...joke...really. No ill will intended.
And YEAH! Charlie! That three pointer...holy hell!!!

I knew Darlene Hooley when I served on the Clackamas Dem Party Central Committee in the early 90s before she was in Congress. A solid Democrat, firmly belonging to the Clinton era. It is fitting that she is retiring as the Clinton era is coming to an end.

I was there tonight and it was an energizing event. Wish I had the energy to stay back and call but had kid duty. Hillary's campaign is off to a great start. Nice to meet you Chris. And Steve, I dont think Merkely needs a personality implant. His personality is great.

Just out: TPM-New SurveyUSA results for Oregon: Obama 52%, Clinton 42%.

Not to thread-jack, but that Novick-Merkley KATU poll does need some Blue press! Steve Novick's LSAT score was higher than Jim Onhofe's college GPA... Ok, big surprise, but let's talk about the actual Senate race!
Just a side note- Like Hillary, I hear AG candidate Greg Macpherson's been campaigning mostly out of a downtown PDX office (in this case, his high-powered law firm). John Kroger's been to numerous events near me at the UO law school, and like the Obama campaign, seems to have a left a wide campaign wake across the state. It'll be interesting to see how each campaign style fares in May...

Was a great opening tonight! Thanks goes to Congresswoman Hooley for coming out and getting everyone energized and it was great to see so many familiar faces.
I'm really excited to start working hard for Senator Clinton here in Oregon.

Awesome Bill R- but does that poll take into effect the Hillary PDX office opening bump?
Posted by: TroyB | Apr 7, 2008 9:50:51 PM
There's only a bump for a campaign office opening if you have people show up. I kid I kid. Seriously though, I'm surprised Clinton even opened an office here. The way I was reading her logic the only states left that matter are Pennsylvania and Indiana. We're not exactly an "electoral must win". We're not "working class". We fall in that "highly educated elite", "latte sipping" category. Maybe we got an exemption from her previous strategy because we don't caucus like Washington.

The Convention is one giant caucus, so I don't see how her strategy of trying to take Obama's committed delegates is going to work once they get to Denver.
Time to end the triangulation and build the party from the ground up.

Just a warning to Clinton donors. It is being reported on Daily Kos that folks who have signed up for automated deductions from their accounts for donations to the Clinton campaign have not been able to get them stopped 3-4 months after requesting the campaign to stop the automatic deductions.

Hooley has been an uninspired, incompetent representative of our district for her entire career. She got very little done in her 12 years and was one of those type of Democrats we spend more time apologizing for that depending on to get anything done. It's a fitting end to a failed political career that Hooley would admire someone like the Clintons who have put their selfish interests ahead of our party for her entire career.
Had to laugh that Hillary once again proved what a slimeball pol she's been all her life by calling for a boycott of the Olympic OPENING CEREMONIES, but not the Olympics. I'm still waiting for any of our whore'd out Democrat elected officials in this state to stand up and call for people to call for a boycott of the 2008 Olympic Team Trials in Eugene. This after the marketing whores behind the Team Trials were actually sleazy enough to use "The Whole World is Watching" chants of anti-war protestors at the 1968 Democratic Convention to promote that event.

...and didn't we discuss the opening ceremony olympic idea here a few weeks back? If I recall, Kari pointed out that France was thinking of doing this so it's athletes could still compete. I thought it was a pretty good idea and I'm glad Clinton agrees.

Darlene Hooley's a class act and a leader who has represented Oregon well, regardless of her superdelegate vote. She's someone whose service commands respect.

And one more thing, the death match is a great idea. Maybe we could have some sort of match where we all pay to get in and the winner's candidate could take all.
Maybe get a couple of undercard matches as well. Any suggestions? Novick vs. Merkley supporters?

Do the candidates know how to say Oregon? Willamette Week doesn't. Rather than ORYGUN, they think it is pronounced OR-UH-GUN!

There's no UH in Oregon Willamette Week.

Hey Katy, I LIVE in her district and I know exactly what she HASN'T delivered except talk and precious little of merit in that.
If I recall, Kari pointed out that France was thinking of doing this so it's athletes could still compete.
People are dying under a murderous, lying regime, and you are so morally bankrupt you think it is important to give athletes a chance to compete? What is the matter with you? So typical of a selfish Clinton and Hooley supporter.

China: New violence in Tibet kills 8 activists
http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2008-04-05-china-tibet_N.htm
The London-based Free Tibet Campaign said police opened fire on hundreds of Buddhist monks and lay people who had marched on local government offices to demand the release of two monks detained for possessing photographs of the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled Buddhist leader.
This is after several weeks now of brutality and outright murder of monks by a corrupt Chinese government that has built a corporate fascist state with the support of DLC Democrats like the Clintons. (Remember the 1999 WTO Conference when dirtbag Bill and Hillary were selling out labor and the Democratic Party?). Hillary's call to only boycott the opening ceremonies is as low as it goes. It is nothing less than a whoring attempt to make political hay off this with trashy supporters like Katy who says she thinks it is a good idea to make a cheap theatrical show (so typical of certain Oregonians and NorthWest'ners who think it's about show over substance) of it so privileged U. S. athletes can compete.
Boycott the Eugene Team Trials, boycott the Olympics. Refuse to watch, refuse to patronize advertisers and businesses who support either. Get in the face of your friends who make slimy arguments like Katy because ultimately people like that are friends of nobody but themselves.
And by the way Katy, Kari is a sold-out DLC Democrat so pointing to his rationalizations make you look even stupider and more disgusting.

"And by the way Katy, Kari is a sold-out DLC Democrat so pointing to his rationalizations make you look even stupider and more disgusting."
So I guess you figure that BlueOregon exists to keep us hothead occupied with something harmless rather than - say - whacking some plutocrats? The DLC thing only works if you're half awake, stirred up people are contrary to its format.
I may think Katy is backing the wrong horse and I may have no idea why she is, but that makes her neither stupid nor disgusting. At the rate you're going you run out of adjectives for BushCo using them on your own side. Pretty damn short sighted. Pretty damn Rovian. Feel insulted yet? You sound exactly like the 28%ers regarding their guy, George II. You messianic thinkers scare hell out of me, these are politicians, you're going to be seriously disappointed when that fact is demonstrated in action.
Whatever points you may have had disappeared under the blanket of your invective.

WTF? Please, do explain... especially how it relates to the Olympics.
First, I'll leave it to you to characterize the actual positions of candidates you actually support, and Mandate Media actually pays the light bills charging. As a group, you and they are hardly what Paul Wellstone called "The Democratic wing of the Democratic Party". And by the way, Obama, Joe Lieberman's protege, falls in that group --- just ask the Clinton supporters who at least quite factually point that out. (A point for your side Katy).
Second, Katy, not me, pointed to your rationalization because she seemingly has nothing intelligent to argue in support of her own immoral position:
If I recall, Kari pointed out that France was thinking of doing this so it's athletes could still compete. I thought it was a pretty good idea and I'm glad Clinton agrees
Third, you see what happens when your advance positions and argue for candidates who lack integrity on the face, those positions and arguments are easily ape'd by others who support individual candidates you happen not to support, but whose politics are mainly quite in step with the kind of politics you do support.
Charles:
but that makes her neither stupid nor disgusting. At the rate you're going you run out of adjectives for BushCo using them on your own side.
What makes her stupid and disgusting in this situation are the statements she made in support of her poor choice in backing Clinton and her morally bankrupt position on not holding the Chinese accountable by boycotting the Olympics. She even just lazily pointed to someone else's argument rather than make a more honorable defense on her own. I know it is terribly unfashionable in the overly insecure segment of Oregonians and on Blue Oregon to call out people for the content (or not) of their arguments. That's the one thing people deserved to be called out for, so too bad if you don't like it. I'm certainly not asking you to like me or it. Katy made a choice on who to support and how to argue her support and she deserves criticism for poor choices on both counts.
And you're a rather limited person if you actually believe it's fine to hold the other side mercilessly unaccountable but not those on "our" side any less accountable. The word for that kind of person is HYPOCRITE and a disgusting hypocrite of the worse kind who gave us 7 years of near fascist government, over 4000 dead in Iraq (and don't forget Afghanistan), a failing economy, a broken health care system, ...., shall I go on?
I think Kari runs Blue Oregon (which he lists as a Mandate Media client BTW) because it is part of the Web 2.0 phenomena in which people like Kari and Jeff make their way in life by what marketers now refer to as "building the brand of Me". That's fine with me, and I wish them every success in that and Kari every success with Mandate Media. That doesn't change one bit the obligation to hold people accountable on all sides including him and posters on all sides for really bankrupt political positions. I'm a First Amendment absolutist and believer as the Founders in liberty first, so I'm all for more talk rather than less no matter who it offends, and particularly if it offends hypocrites on "our" side. (Oh, and I think movement Libertarians are kind of nuts, while Republicans these days largely are fascists and criminals, so don't even go there.)

I was there last night and was impressed with the high level of enthusiasm and support. This is a campaign that knows they back the winner.
Hooley's statement struck me in at least one important way...when she told us the story about Hillary meeting them in place of Bill, I realized that I'd heard that kind of story from others. Hillary stood in for the President when he wasn't there, so anyone who claims she has no experience with Presidential politics is sorely missing a bolt.
I am meeting more and more people who are questioning the reliability of Obama to take on the presidency this early in his national political career, and I've met several who not only have utterly changed their support from Obama to Clinton, but who have told me their friends in other states who voted for Obama are now having voter's remorse.
If you want a candidate who can readily beat McCain (and polls out now don't reflect the attack the Republicans will issue against Obama--there is not much more they can do to Hillary than they've already done), it's Clinton. Luckily, when she walks into the Oval Office, there won't be a 6 month adjustment period--she's already there.

One more thing...about the Olympics. We once boycotted the entire Olympics in the Soviet Union. I had a friend who had worked his whole life for that opportunity. He made the team, and knew this would be his only chance due to his age and his career. I can't even begin to tell you about his agony at having lost that opportunity. The other athletes were equally as devastated.
Boycotting the opening ceremonies is the smartest thing we could do because the US delegation is the largest. But punishing our hard-working athletes to punish China is just unconscionable.

I want to recommend to "Democrat" that he take his commentary over to Portland Indymedia, where the insulting, bombastic tone would be considered par for the course.

You're just as wacked out as a right wing moron. If people like you were running our foreign policy we'd have seen mushroom clouds happen years ago. Good idea to punish the athletes for the sins of a country. We didn't boycot the Berlin Olympics and Adolf Hitler got to watch a whole lot of Jesse Owens. I think his 4 gold medals made a bigger statement than ignoring the Olympics.

I just watched Sen. Clinton at the hearing today on Iraq. She asked the best questions. Why would it be irresponsible to bring home the troops from Iraq? Or is it irresponsible to leave them there? The troops have served very bravely and now need to come home. I hope that Sen. Clinton keeps asking those important questions. And the voters of Oregon support Hillary Clinton all the way to the White House. She is the most experienced, prepared, and ready for Day One. Her universal health care is very comprehensive, she has good ideas for development of jobs in the green collar field, his been involved with children and school programs a long time, and human rights. Go Oregon, the USA, and Hillary!

We have a candidate who has the experience the expertise, and the fight to be the next President of the United States-Hillary Clinton. However, people in la la land, would rather back Obama, who has so little legislative experience it is a joke. Do you remember? Over 100 times voted present in the Illinois legislature, rather than take a stand, and his weak legislative record so far as a US Senator. You really need to look up his real record, not the "built-up" one on his website. Remember, he's the guy who was given the leadership on one of the committees concerning actions in Afghanistan. How many meetings has he held so far? Zero, zip, nada, none. Oh, that's right, he's been too busy running for President to hold even 1 little meeting. Pretty sad. Maybe you're voting for Obama, because he is going to bring us all together. Wonderful thought, but then why is the Democratic party as divided as it is? Don't say the Clintons. This one you can drop on Obama's doorstep, and it started by his campaign falsely accusing the Clintons of racism. Lastly, how can you endorse someone, who does not want to see all the votes count. Obama would like to see over 2 million votes not counted. After what the Dems have gone through in the last 2 general elections, it is slap in the face to democracy. It was offered, and it was possible to have revotes in both Florida, and Michigan, so why didn't Obama want to have revotes? It makes a mockery of all the times the Dems complained in the last 2 elections, about the Republicans stealing the election. The sooner people realize that Obama is a fraud, the better off the Democratic party will be. Go Oregon, USA, and Hillary.
