Live-blogging the election returns
I'll be live-blogging the Oregon Primary Election returns this evening right from the KGW8 newsroom.
Aaron Weiss, a senior producer at KGW has invited a small handful of bloggers to come in and see how the other half lives and blog on whatever we want. For me that will be a "just the facts" reporting of the returns since the time for partisan bickering is behind us.
I've set up a special email addy just for this live-blog so that Blue Oregon readers who want me to check something specific more often or whatever can email me directly with the request. I'll try to follow the discussion thread on that post too, but it'll be difficult to focus on too many windows at the same time so the email addy will be there for direct feedback and requests.

I've never done anything like this in this kind of a setting so please don't hesitate to give me feedback while the returns are rolling in.

It will be here. Probably starting around 8:00. That's when Aaron said the returns will start rolling in. I'm going to try to be there a bit early but that may not be possible since I have to drive 40 miles home from work, shower and then drive 20 miles back in to the KGW studios.

Jack Bog will also be there and I'm aware that he wrote something a few days ago saying that it'd be on the KGW site. But I think he's mistaken what Aaron was offering.

"THE CRYBABIES" Boo Hoo- "Hillary lost to Obama and now I'm going to vote for McCain". Anyone who at this point would still view Sen. Clinton fondly-I am not surprised. To know that after tonight this shameless group will be one step closer to the door is a beautiful thing.If anyone has Terry McCaulife's, Lanny Davis's,or Geraldine Ferraro's phone number please call them and them know I- FastShoes is a happyhappy man. The "Rookie" was too quick for the Clinton's and it is time to move on.

Somewhat off-topic, but election related... Is there a good reason the "polls" still close at 8pm? Seems to me that in this day of VBM we could move it up to 7pm (or even 6) without seriously disenfranchising many folks. Some states close their physical polls at 6 or 7 which seems harsh given that many will try to vote after work, but since we've had two weeks to vote and could drop the ballot off on the way home today with minimal time expense, I don't see why we should wait till 8pm. Anybody with me?
[The real issue for me is that I have to kill an hour or so after work before the election night parties get ramped up. While this probably isn't of major concern to most voters, it's selfishly on my mind.]

Because of the amount of people still heading to the Elections offices up until that time. The lines are still pretty long at 8 p.m.

Nate, I'm with you on closing the polls earlier than 8. I don't think 6:00 would seriously impair anyone.
While we're thinking about this, why do ballots have to go out so early? Do we really need an 18-day window to return them? Makes it tough on the campaigns, stretching out the GOTV effort and subjecting voters to lots of phone calls. Why not 10 days? 7 days?

Ugh. I feel nauseous. I'm always so damn anxious before the results come on.
And it didn't help that I had to go on the radio this morning in a completely unrelated matter. At least it was OPB.

Hmmm...just heard a Hillary clip on the radio justifying her continued campaign. Said that Karl Rove had done an analysis that she was the stronger candidate. Gee, wish I'd heard it before I voted...

Grow up and be a classy winner and try to get folks to support your candidate in the Fall. This just might work unless you have a different agenda and want McCain in November.

I think some things have been crappy in this election cycle.
I have many hurt feelings that I know many other people will as well, but I do hope winners win with respect, the losers lose with class and that we all have a safe night.

Eight o'clock is so ingrained in people's heads that to change it without disenfranchising people you'd need a significant publicity campaign. If you were a little organized about it though, I bet you could get pretty good coverage in the major media at no charge.
The thing I like about the idea is that it would get us into the action in the national broadcast media if we started counting at 5 rather than 8.
As it is now, most of the country goes to bed before we have results.
