Condolences
Barack Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, passed away today. We send our deep condolences to Senator Obama and his entire family.
Obama has described his grandmother as the cornerstone of the family, and movingly spoke of her while describing his strong support of women's rights. I'm sure her influence will be felt in his leadership in the coming years.

I am sending my deepest condolences to Barack Obama and his family. It is always sad to lose a love one, especially someone who has raised you. My deepest sympathy and may her memories always live within you and your family.

Don't people usually talk about honoring the wishes of the dead, or thinking "they would have wanted it that way?" I can't imagine Ms. Dunham having any greater wish than to see her grandson become the 44th President of the United States. Totally appropriate call, IMO.

I'm with TorridJoe -- The line stays...particularly because Obama has spoken of his grandmother influencing his politics so significantly.

For what it is worth, the Obama family suggests that those who wish to remember Madelyn Dunham do so with a donation to a charity fighting against cancer - a disease that knows no politics.

Yup. Bill Bennett - who was a cabinet official under Reagan and Bush 41 - said today (paraphrasing), "We all have grandmothers, and most of them say the same thing: Work hard, stay in school, make something of yourself. I'm sure she is, and would have been, very proud of her grandson. Of course he should stay on the campaign trail and keep pushing forward. The campaign should go on for one more day."
It's not quite the same sentiment as Kristin's, but it's in the same ballpark.

Yea, I mean do whatever you want. It wasn't necessary for the post to include the politicking, and it felt cheap. Especially since the people that would visit this site are unlikely to be still making their minds up, I just thought it would be better to have a little more class than that. And I would have to guess that her grandson getting this job was not the most important thing in Her life.

This is such sad news! I have been praying for her to be able to live long enough to see her grandson elected. Wow, I am in shock and very saddened,and crying for a woman I have never met who helped shape the man that will help all of us change this country. I am so sorry and send my condolences to the Obama family. God bless you Madelyn and I know you will be watching from above tomorrow night and will be very proud of your grandson.
