Dividing lines emerging, blurring mayor's race

The Labor Day weekend unofficially marks the start of general election jostling, at least in terms of the Portland mayor’s race.

While Charlie Hales and Jefferson Smith have laid a bit low over the past couple of months in terms of campaigning, the opponents are now trying to differentiate themselves as the “‘blank’ candidate.” And while neither seems eager to put the word “business” into that blank space, Hales and Smith have, in the last two days, touted some pretty major support.
