Jefferson Smith says assault charge stemmed from 'accident'

Portland mayoral candidate Jefferson Smith said a Monday report that he was charged with misdemeanor assault against a female classmate in 1993 comes as unnamed parties are “mak(ing) this campaign about innuendo and personal smears rather than on our ideas and vision for the city.”

Smith went on the defensive Monday afternoon after the Willamette Week newspaper reported charges against him were dropped after his attorney arranged for a settlement.
