Hales to keep Reese on as Portland police chief

KOIN:

Portland Mayor-elect Charlie Hales will keep Mike Reese in his position as chief of the Portland Police Bureau. Evyn Mitchell, a spokesperson for Hales, confirmed the decision in an email to KOIN.  “Yes, Charlie plans on keeping Chief Reese on and is hopeful that they will work together to move the city's police bureau in positive directions,” Mitchell wrote. Reese was appointed to the position by outgoing Mayor Sam Adams in May of 2010. During his tenure, Reese has overseen high profile situations including the Occupy Portland protests and a U.S. Department of Justice report that claimed that Portland police officers have been using excessive force against people with mental illnesses. In November of 2011, Reese briefly considered being a candidate for mayor, before ultimately choosing not to run.Reese has been with the bureau since 1994. Prior to that, he spent several years as a deputy sheriff with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. -- Faris Tanyos
