Callahan, an information technology consultant, jumped into the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in 2014, seeking to be his party's challenger to incumbent U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.).

He earned national attention after a videotaped dust-up during WW's editorial endorsement interview but finished a distant third behind the two mainstream candidates, Dr. Monica Wehby and then-state Rep. Jason Conger (R-Bend).

Callahan is no stranger to the ballot. He ran for the Oregon House in 2010 as a member of the Pacific Green party, president of the U.S. as a Republican in 2012; and, for the Oregon House as a Republican in 2012.

Earlier this year, he set his aim at a more modest target, running in the May election for a position on the Mt. Hood Community College board. He came much closer that time, losing to Teena Ainslie, 47 percent to 41 percent.

Callahan tweeted last night to followers that they should stay tuned for a "special announcement" today.

His website for the 2016 race makes plain what the announcement will be:

I’m running for US Senate because I believe that Oregon deserves to be represented by a true conservative who can win in this state. No more half-way measures. No more half-conservative candidates. We need a candidate who fights for the conservative values he believes in, and who doesn’t hedge when asked to state his opinions.
