Portland State students deserve regional business tax (OPINION)

Cost is the No. 1 obstacle for students at PSU. In our years here, we've seen tuition and student debt go up as the state has cut funding for higher education. While in student government, I (Eric) drove to Salem two days every week during the legislative session to advocate for more state support. The good news is that the Legislature increased funding for universities in the 2015 session. However, PSU still receives less money today from the state when adjusted for inflation than it did in 2008. Over that period, enrollment has increased dramatically.

That's why we need a long-term solution to stabilize funding and avoid future cuts and tuition increases. We need an additional revenue source, and the proposed tax would raise more than $30 million a year for scholarships and student support.
