In the 2012 Portland mayor's race, more candidates means a better debate

Charlie Hales' decision to run for mayor next year kicks off what should be the most substantive, focused, competitive campaign in a generation. Still, I hope the list of serious, substantive, financially viable candidates -- the unfortunate truth is that if you can't raise money, you won't get elected -- keeps growing. The next mayor, regardless of who that is, needs to be battle tested and brimming with well-vetted ideas.
