OR-01: AP reports David Wu will resign

Rep. David Wu (D)

Only a tweet so far: WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Rep. David Wu of Oregon has announced that he is resigning from Congress. For background, read this post. Wu had been accused of sexually assualting an 18-year-old girl and just the other day said he would not seek re-election. However, pressure had been mounting on him to resign, with his primary opponents and multiple members of Congress (including Wu's home-state senators) calling on him to quit. A snap poll by SurveyUSA also showed deep unhappiness with Wu among his constituents. The new allegations came on top of a long string of bizarre and inappopriate behavior that led to mass staff resignations and had prompted two serious candidates to seek to oust Wu in the Democratic primary. Now there will be a special election; for details on when and how that might occur, please read this post by BlueOregon's Kari Chisholm. Oregon recently approved new redistricting maps, but it's unclear whether a special will take place under the old lines or under the new lines. In addition to Brad Witt and Brad Avakian, who were already running, other candidates (including Susan Bonamici) were still considering the race and may now be more likely to get in. 9:29 AM PT: David Kurtz at TPM relays that Wu says his "resignation won't be effective until the debt ceiling crisis is resolved."
