Oregon Republicans want Rep. David Wu out now

KOIN:

PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon Republicans say Rep. David Wu should sign a resignation letter immediately and let his district get on with electing a successor. After a published report alleging an aggressive sexual encounter with the teenage daughter of a friend, Wu said Tuesday he would resign, as he put it: "upon the resolution of the debt-ceiling crisis."Gov. John Kitzhaber will set an election date, but not until he gets Wu's letter.Spokesman Greg Leo of the state Republican organization said Wednesday the delay complicates the decisions potential GOP candidates have to make about raising money and scheduling.Wu's spokesman, Erik Dorey, says the seven-term Democrat isn't trying to hang on indefinitely and will step down "when the immediate crisis is resolved."Dorey says Wu's constituents deserve a say in what could be a close vote.Meanwhile in Washington D.C., a video reporter with The Washington Times caught up with Rep. Wu Wednesday as he was getting into a vehicle, repeatedly asking him why he chose to delay his resignation until after a debt ceiling vote. Reporter: And why are you waiting until after the debt resolution, sir, why not just--why not just resign now if it's such an important thing for your family? Wu: We have a very important national issue going on. --Staff & wire reports; video courtesy The Washington Times
