Wu calls Kitzhaber; resignation effective 11:59 p.m.

Rep. David Wu submitted his resignation Wednesday to Gov. John Kitzhaber and House Speaker John Boehner, officially effective at 11:59 p.m., his office said.Kitzhaber's office said the governor had a brief conversation with Rep. Wu around 5 p.m. and will still await an actual letter before setting a date for a special election.Rep. Wu came under pressure for his resignation after news of an alleged unwanted sexual act directed towards a young woman in California. The long-standing Democrat for Oregon has been in turmoil since before the February election when several staffers left, citing his strange and erratic behavior.Fellow Democrats called for his resignation after the most recent incident, while House Leader Nancy Pelosi requested an official ethics investigation.The Congressman issued a brief statement, saying once again that serving his country "has been the greatest honor of my life.""However great the honor and engaging the work, there comes a time to hand on the privilege of elected office-and that time has come," said Rep. Wu.Wu is the fourth member of Congress to resign this year following a sex scandal, reports the Associated Press.
