Education board to hear UO President Lariviere before likely dismissal

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — University of Oregon President Richard Lariviere will speak to the State Board of Higher Education before board members formally decide whether he will keep his job.The 3 p.m. meeting held in Suite 515 at the Portland State University Academic and Student Recreation Center will be streamed live on the board's website.Lariviere was told last week that his contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of June. Gov. John Kitzhaber said over the weekend that the Board would be justified in ousting Lariviere because the president has set the interests UO ahead of other universities'.News of his likely ouster has sparked an outcry in Eugene and an outpouring of support for the president. Lawmakers, faculty and some students say Lariviere elevated the university's stature and fought hard to improve it.A group of 8 to 10 people protesting Lariviere's fired eggs at the home of the chancellor of the state university system and spray painted the words "The Hat" on the driveway. The Eugene Register-Guard reports Chancellor George Pernsteiner and his family were at the official residence known as Treetops about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Pernsteiner told the paper he wasn't aware of the egging until later. He says he found an envelope outside and gave it to the university police, unopened. The hat has become the symbol of anger at the apparent plans of the Board of Higher Education to act against Lariviere Monday afternoon.___Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
